The New York Mets have removed catcher Rob Johnson and left-handed pitcher Justin Hampson from the 40-man roster, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN Nee York.  After clearing waivers, both players have elected free agency, according to Rubin. Johnson, who appeared in 17 games for NY in 2012, collected 13 hits in 52 at-bats with four runs batted in: According to Rubin: “Johnson’s departure and the free agency of Kelly Shoppach leave Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas as the only major league-capable catchers under the organization’s control at this point. The Mets will consider re-signing Shoppach because his likely 2013 salary would match the organization’s spending capability, but team officials were not enamored with Shoppach and are first expected to investigate other options” Hampson, the Mets lone lefty reliever during the seasons final week, was 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA while holding left handed batters to a .150 average (3-for-20) in 13 relief appearances — spanning 10 innings.
