There might be some question if Zack Wheeler is ready to assume the role of savior for the New York Mets, despite his and manager Terry Collins’ proclamations to the contrary of those lofty expectations. With the statistical and financial numbers having been crunched, the decision is it is time to start the clock on Wheeler. The Mets don’t know who’ll be dropped from the rotation. Because of today’s doubleheader, the Mets will go at least one cycle through the rotation with six starters. Wheeler will start the second game with Matt Harvey taking the opener. That pitching future the Mets have been bragging about? Well, we’ll get a glimpse today. Ideally, the Mets don’t want to return Wheeler to the minor leagues after today. As their thinking when Harvey came up last year, they want him here to stay. Because Wheeler won’t be activated until between games, rules prohibit him of being in the dugout to watch Harvey. That will happen soon enough. “[It will be] a fun day,’’ Collins said th

A Deeper Look At Zack Wheeler’s Debut

I noticed a few things during Zack Wheeler’s start I’d like to point out. A few things impressed me and there are some things that are noteworthy after doing some research: Of Wheeler’s seven strikeouts, six were swinging and it was only the opposing pitcher that took a called third strike. All seven third strikes were fastballs. Six were four-seamers, none of those were less...

Wheeler and Harvey - some serious heat

Yesterday could not have been better for Mets fans. Not only did they sweep a double-header in Atlanta, something most would term impossible, but they did it with a bookend of two of the brightest pitching phenoms in the game with Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler. The Atlanta Braves saw some serious heat yesterday. According to Brooksbaseball.net, here is the fastball breakdown...

Top prospect Zack Wheeler ready for NY Mets debut

Zack Wheeler is excited about his big league debut with the New York Mets, especially since he'll be pitching not far from where he grew up. Wheeler is a native of suburban Atlanta and will have plenty of family and friends in the stands at Turner Field on Tuesday night, when he pitches the second game of a doubleheader against the Braves. The 23-year-old right-hander is one...

Now that he's about to make his highly anticipated debut with the New York Mets, Zack Wheeler will rely on some advice he got from a minor league coach. Don't look up. ''I know it's going to be a big moment in my life,'' Wheeler said Monday, the day before he takes the mound against the first-place Atlanta Braves. ''There's probably going...

It’s Zack Wheeler Time

It’s the moment San Francisco Giants fans have dreaded since that fateful day in 2011: Right-handed pitching prospect Zack Wheeler has been promoted to the big leagues and will make his first start of his MLB career on Tuesday evening. Harvey Has Been Mortal Late in Games

Terry Collins watched on from the dugout as Matt Harvey dominantly no-hit the Atlanta Braves for six innings on Tuesday afternoon. The Dark Knight of Gotham ended the game with a career-high 13 strikeouts on 116 pitches, but Collins almost mismanaged the game out of the Mets’ hands. While Harvey has indisputably been among the best pitchers in baseball by every conceivable metric...

You Mad, Bro? “Harvey the (nearly) Unhittable” Edition

From SB Nation’s “Talking Chop” Blog: “i would say at least the mets have their B lineup out there too but i can never really tell with them” “The Mets don’t have an A lineup” “No Valdespin “ So watch Wood throw a complete game 2 hitter here and then start the debate that we have 7 good starting pitchers to choose from” “The Mets don’t deserve Matt Harvey”...

It was nice after the "Super Tuesday" doubleheader to forget a lot of our problems and just allow ourselves to dream. Oh boy, do we feel the bad times. For example, when...

The race for NL Rookie of the Year is getting crowded

The debut of a top young prospect is becoming a weekly occurrence in MLB. On Tuesday, pitcher Zack Wheeler made his first major league start for the New York Mets. The 23-year-old threw six shutout innings, holding the Atlanta Braves to four hits in a 6-1 victory. Wheeler struck out seven batters while walking five.  Last week, the Pittsburgh Pirates' Gerrit Cole introduced...

Mets 4, Braves 3

Matt Harvey pitched six hitless innings, John Buck homered and the New York Mets held off another Atlanta comeback, beating the Braves 4-3 Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader. Harvey (6-1) didn't allow a hit until Jason Heyward's fluke infield single leading off the seventh but tired in the eighth as the Braves tried to rally for the second straight game. Trailing...

Mets Nip Braves 4-3

Matt Harvey pitched no-hit ball for six innings and fanned thirteen batters as the New York Mets held off a late Atlanta at Turner Field to nip the Braves, 4-3. It was just 15 hours after Freddie Freeman’s walk-off homer, that the Braves fell to the Mets in game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader. The Braves sent Alex Wood to the mound for his first big league start.  Wood was stellar...
