In the final days of the Joe Torre Era, the resurrection of Ruben Sierra was one of the great joys to behold. In his first Yankee incarnation, Sierra whined that the team only cared about winning, not HR totals, prompting him to pitched out like a plate of bad clams. When he returned, Sierra was an elder statesman, clubhouse leader and warrior against evil - so much that Torre, in a season-ending mini-tradition, chose Ruben to manage the final game.  And when Sierra took out a pitcher, he mimicked Torre's walk so perfectly that both dugouts cracked up. I don't know if Vernon Wells can do Girardi's hand-wipe across the forehead. But he came to NY with his share of critics.  Did you hear the way he was booed in Toronto? (Maybe he'll hear it in LA, too.) Much of it was his big contract - (it amazes and distresses me how fans blame players for bad contracts, letting the owners skate) - But Vernon Wells has an officer and a gentleman in NY, and I think last night Girardi g...

Icebags, dead ahead: The looming Yankee logjam could bring an end to the Hunger Games

Soon, Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis will return from their Jacuzzis and reclaim their Yankee lockers, perhaps bringing to a close the most satisfying month since October 2009. Don't gemmie wrong. To beat the Rangers, Angels and Tigers, we need both guys. Trouble is, without a tweaked gonad, their return will end Lyle Overbay's time as a Yankee. After the last six...

Yankees call up INF David Adams, cut Chris Nelson

The New York Yankees have selected the contract of infielder David Adams from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and they designated third baseman Chris Nelson for assignment two weeks after acquiring him. Adams was set to make his major league debut on his 26th birthday, starting at third base and batting sixth against Seattle on Wednesday night. Manager Joe Girardi says the 2008...

Steinbrenner calls Yankees 'scrappy'

Saying, "I'm proud of them," Hal Steinbrenner praised the Yankees for the success the team has enjoyed thus far this season despite the team's many injuries.

Teixeira expects to be with Yankees by June

credit: getty images The New York Yankees have been riddled with injuries since the start of the season but slowly players are returning to the field. Curtis Granderson returned to the lineup recently and Mark Teixiera should be back with the team shortly. Teixiera told MLB.com writer Brian Hoch that he expects to be back with the team by June 1. Previously Teixiera has set a return...

Hey, Joba ‘the Hut’, keep your mouth shut

For those of you who haven’t already heard the news, Yankees relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain told Yankees closer Mariano Rivera to never “shush” him again. The remark came in the middle of an interview Mo was having with some of the media after Friday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. Chamberlain apparently got so loud, that Mo had to tell him to keep his voice down...

The New York Yankees are little more than middling contenders without Andy Pettitte

After leaving in the fifth inning of a 3-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night in New York, borderline Hall of Fame Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte was sent to the 15-day disabled list with a strained trapezius muscle. A three-time All-Star who has captured five crowns in pinstripes, the 6-foot-5, 225 pound Pettitte (4-3, 3.83 ERA) is one of the primary reasons New York...

Prince Harry plays baseball with Mark Teixeira in Harlem (Video)

As Prince Harry wrapped up his trip to the United States on the East Coast, he got the chance to play America's pastime with the fine folks over at Harlem RBI. During the event, Harry got his chance to swing the bat as he was being pitched to by New York Yankees Mark Teixeira. To give credit to Harry, he made good contact: (Courtesy of Gothamist)

Yankees win in Curtis Granderson's return

Yesterday marked what could be the first step in the Yankees transforming from the surprising underdog to the dominant force we've come to know.  Curtis Granderson made his return to the lineup after missing 38 games with a fractured forearm.  The Yankees' outfielder was inserted into the lineup as the starting left fielder. While Granderson may have gone hitless in...

Girardi is at his best

When Joe Girardi took over the then Florida Marlins in 2006, little was expected of him. The team was young, inexperienced and projected to finish in dead last. Girardi guided them to a 78-84 record, en route to winning Manager of the Year for the National League. After having disagreements with management, as most people seem to have with the Marlins nowadays, Girardi was fired...

Yankees rumors: Robinson Cano extension talks continue

New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner told David Lennon of Newsday that the team has kept up contract talks with pending free agent Robinson Cano’s new agent, adding that the sides are “going to continue in the weeks to come to work through things and try to come to an agreement." Cano recently parted ways with agent Scott Boras in favor of a new agency headed...

Nick Saban Calls ‘The Devil Himself’ Comments From Florida Coach ‘Terribly Disappointing’

The Yankees may embrace their Evil Empire nickname, but Nick Saban is not enjoying being called “the devil himself.” Florida offensive line coach Tim Davis whipped out that phrasing at a recent booster meeting, the second time that an SEC-affiliated coach has compared Saban to Lucifer himself. Saban responded Thursday. “It really is a little terribly disappointing,” he said...

Yankees rally, defeat Mariners

Once Felix Hernandez tweaked his back, the whole game took an odd twist. Robinson Cano hit a two-run double, Lyle Overbay delivered a tiebreaking sacrifice fly and the New York Yankees rallied in the seventh inning after King Felix was forced to make an early exit, beating Seattle 4-3 Tuesday night. ''It was hard luck,'' Hernandez said. The Mariners' ace was...

Yankees continuing winning tradition

A few days ago, I mentioned to former Nick Swisher that I had picked his former Yankees teammates to finish last in the American League East. He smiled and shook his head. "Bro," he said, "you can't bet against those guys. You just can't." Lesson learned. When I walked into the Yankees clubhouse Tuesday afternoon, they were not last in the AL East....

Whats luck got to do with it?

It’s May 18th and the Yankees are sitting atop the AL East which comes as a surprise to many for a plethora of reasons. No one thought the Yankees could continue their dominance for going on two decades, even if the Yankees were healthy. Right now, on the Yankee’s disabled list, sits names like Jeter, Rodriguez, Teixeira, Youkilis, Chamberlin and now Pettitte. So how are the...

Mariners outlast Yankees 3-2 thanks to Morse’s 10th HR of the year

Wedge tossed early – Everyone got to pitch! Smiles. Tonight’s article is a little different, because this team is a little different. On a night where everything went off script, the Mariners pushed through and did just enough to get the win. Seattle 3, NY Yankees 2 When: 7:05 PM ET, Thursday, May 16, 2013 Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York Temperature: 75° Umpires...
