From Awful Announcing:

One of Awful Announcing's favorites is impassioned White Sox cheerleader and play-by-play man Hawk Harrelson. Hawk's antics are legendary in these circles, but Wednesday may have been one of his best all-time moments.

The White Sox were facing Tampa Bay on Wednesday when home plate umpire Mark Wegner abruptly ejected White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana for throwing behind Ben Zobrist. Hawk then went on an epic rant:

"Oh what are you doin??? He threw him out of the ball game??? You've got to be BLEEPIN me??  What in the hell are you doing?  What are you doing Wegner???  You've gotta be kiddin me!! That is so bad that is absolutely brutal!! That is unbelievable!!  I'll tell ya what, they have got to start making guys be accountable, that is totally absurd.  That just tells you... here's an umpire in the American League that knows nothing about the game of baseball."

If I'm the White Sox, I just say the heck with it and let Hawk Harrelson rant and cuss and call umpires by their last names on a permanent basis moving forward.  His antics are much more entertaining this way!

  • I'm a Rays fan and I thought that umpire had lost his mind , I agree with Hawk that these umps should be held accountable , I have seen some of the worst umpiring in my 50 years lately . Umpires should be seen and not heard . Let the Hawk rant , it's good and for the game and some of these guys are terrible !!!
  • dodger fan many years, but watched yesterdays ray-whitesox game this is crazy, when the whitesox player got hit early on that umpire should have warned both benches immediately, the past year the umpiring in both leagues has been terrible, missed calls or no calls at all, bring on instant replay then maybe it will change or be without a job, lots of folks looking for jobs.
  • what a dope
  • I have seen terrible calls but, this one takes the cake.
  • I'm in agreement with Harrelson. He's a character anyway and doesn't surprise me with anything he does. When he played for Boston (I believe), then Cleveland, he was entertaining back then. Umpires need to be accountable too and this was over the top.
  • Umpires are terrible these days; they have gotten lazy. They have screwed up potential perfect games, reinvented the strike zone to fit their idividual beliefs, and made a total joke out of what used to be an honorable position in the game despite the occasional abuse through which they suffered. I am not sure replay is the answer, either; I think it makes them lazier. Accountability to a review committee that decides if they continue their employment should be the answer, of course, but their union would be so busy whining nothing would ever be accomplished.
  • It wasnt a beaner that went behind the batter. The manager should have told the next pitcher to throw the 1st pitch behind the batter. Then see what the umpire would do!!!
  • Yes! I love this! Wegner's just jealous of Quintana's slider. And playa status. Those who can't play...

  • awful umpiring, nothing wrong with the announcing
  • Nice moose knuckle
  • It's too late to complain. He's gone. Quintana should be banned for life.
  • I have to admit that Harralson has a point. Wegner should have issued a warning after the pitch, although, the pitcher was headhunting, but merely was trying to through behind him which also calls for an ejection. Then Harralson makes an error referring to American League umpires. There are no longer American League umpires and National league umpires. This was changed after the umpires went on strike and signed the current labor contract. All umpires now umpire in BOTH leagues, typically alternating American League games and National league games.
  • 2 days ago, AJ Pierzynski blatently spiked Zobrist sliding into 2nd base. Sox retaliated. Rays retaliated. Yesterday it was the same thing. The umpire crew knew this going into the game. Maybe it was a bit premature but it was RIGHT call. Beaning or throwing behind players to protect your teammates being part of the game? Possibly. Intentionally going out of your way (watch the replays) to spike someone? Absolutely Not.
  • The RIGHT call? How about the WRONG call. A harmless throw behind the batter was nothing.
  • I guess you're choosing to only read what you want and not look at the facts. Do a little reading or watch videos of what transpired the past couple of days. Both teams retaliated for plunks, spikes, and what not. The umpire crew knew this going into the game and that was why he was ejected. Harmless? Sure, as to not hitting anyone but it was the "intent" of the pitcher. That's why he was thrown out. Do a little research or be "in the know" please.
  • hawk is a little over the top at times ,But he is so right there are problems in the MLB umpiring system judgement, lazines, out of postion fat guys,Arrant There are some vey good Umpires and they should be commented but these problems should be addressed
  • Good for the Hawk! I am so tired of these politically correct announcers just saying "oh, well" every time an ump screws up. This year has to have some of the worst calls I have ever seen in 40 years of watching baseball. In particular, the Tigers had incorrect calls made against them in three recent games that one could argue cost them each game. Its time for an NFL-type umpire in the press box who reviews each close play and can overrule a decision on the field when an obvious error is made. These short delays are no different that the manager coming out to protest a call. Lets get it right and stop having umpires decide the outcome of games.

  • Not only should the pitcher have been ejected the manager should have joined him for telling him to do it. This kind of sandlot adolescent behavior has no place in a sport where players are paid 8 and 9 digit salaries.

Paul Konerko and Father Time

Paul Konerko is one of the best hitters in baseball. Fans Pants Fall Down at Rays vs. White Sox Game Going for a Foul Ball (Video)

So you would think fat guys would wear belts these days but it's just not the case.  Seriously I think more than half on the fat guys in the world just don't own belts.  The belly fat just pushes the pants right down off the hips and the pants have no chance.  Not sure why they do it.  In this case it was a guy going for a foul ball at the Rays vs. White Sox game last...

Chris Sale’s Dominant Memorial Day

Three weeks ago, it looked like Chris Sale would no longer be starting games for the Chicago White Sox. Yesterday, he struck out over half the batters he faced in 7.1 innings. Sale, 23, had immediate success in moving to the starting rotation after spending the entirety of his two major league seasons overwhelming...
