The San Diego Padres and third baseman Chase Headley reached agreement Wednesday on a one-year, $8.575 million deal. The agreement allows the two sides to avoid an arbitration hearing as Headley was seeking $10.3 million and the Padres were offering $7.075. "It's the system," Padres General Manager Josh Byrnes told U-T San Diego. "He had a great year and he deserves to be rewarded. This is a defendable number." Headley, 28, finished fifth in the 2012 National League Most Valuable Player voting after hitting .286 with 31 homers and a league-leading 115 RBI. He was the league's Player of the Month for both August and September and won the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards for NL third basemen. Headley finished his breakout season by hitting .308 with 23 homers and 73 RBIs after the All-Star break. The Padres have indicated that they would like to sign Headley to a long-term deal.
