On August 21st, the San Diego Padres will retire Trevor Hoffman's # 51 in a ceremony after a game against the Marlins. Hoffman is baseball's all-time leader in saves with 601 and played in 18 Major League seasons. He was picked by the Marlins in the 1992 expansion draft and debuted in 1993. He recorded his first 2 saves with Florida but was then traded to the Padres in a 5 player deal, a deal that sent Gary Sheffield to the Marlins. Hoffman recorded 552 saves with San Diego then finished his career in Milwaukee where he had 47 saves. Hoffman indeed is one of the best closers of all time but his saves record will be surpassed by the GREATEST of them all, Mariano Rivera, soon enough.
