My response to Albert Pujols signing with the Angels was summed up in a simple status update on Facebook:
"Albert Pujols has proven what I've already learned years ago: Hometown discounts no longer exist."
Brian Joura from Mets360.com responded to that with a very fair point:
"I don't know if I'd go that far - I think hometown discounts do exist. However, if an athlete is going to give a hometown discount - they usually sign that type of deal before hitting free agency. If they've gone this far, they're looking for the best deal they can get."
It's a salient point when it comes to the whole "Jose Reyes as Unwanted" discussion. It takes two to tango. If Jose Reyes wanted to give the Mets a "hometown discount", he would have never gotten to the winter meetings as a free agent.
