The best player in the game
Even before the season began, the Blue Hornets had been dubbed the “Dream Team”. And for good reason. With a lineup consisting of the speed (Ichiro Suzuki, Pete Wheeler, Deter Jeter) and power (Pablo Sanchez, Sammy Sosa, Achmed Khan, Ken Griffey Jr.), the Hornets had one of the most star-filled teams in recent memory. And with ace Frank Thomas and his devastating right hook on the hill, the Hornets had a chance to do something truly special this season.
And that’s exactly what they did.
In front of 20,000+ fans at a sold out Super Colassal Dome for Game 3 of the Backyard Baseball World Series, the Hornets shut out the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 4-0 and completed a feat that has never been achieved in the history of baseball. A perfect season. Perfection. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?
After going a perfect 14-0 in the regular season, the Hornets didn’t show any signs of slowing down in the postseason, cruising to seven easy victories. They took the first two games in this series by a combined score of 24-2.
Once again, the Hornets got off to a quick start in Game 3 against Amir Khan. After Ichiro and Pete Wheeler hit back-to-back singles, Pablo Sanchez drove in the game’s first run with a sacrifice fly to left. Sammy Sosa would follow with a RBI single right back up the middle.
That was all the run support Frank Thomas would need as he threw his 11th perfect game in 21 chances and went the distance for the 21st straight time. Thomas threw an economical 46 pitches, striking out seven Devil Rays, three coming on the fireball.
Thomas choked up after the game, saying, “The fans are the real winners here.”
Junior and Mikey Thomas would both add solo shots in the later innings of the game, putting the final score at 4-0. Griffey’s bomb traveled a whopping 590 feet. This kid’s 12 years old and he can hit it almost 600 feet, talk about a child prodigy.
The Kid was on a tear during the entire postseason, smacking seven homers and driving in 12 runs all while posting a hefty .600 batting average. His great postseason performance enabled him to take home Backyard Baseball World Series MVP honors.
Achmed Khan summed up this magical season best, “This season is a result of good team playing and a great coach.”
Why thank you, Achmed, I guess I was a pretty good coach.
