In what was termed as a “household accident,” Los Angeles Angels reliever Scott Downs, who was penned to a three-year, $15 million contract during the offseason, fractured his left big toe, and will be sidelined for at least two weeks, meaning he will start the season on the disabled list.
Downs, who was signed as a free agent along with fellow left-hander Hisanori Takahashi to bolster a sagging Angels bullpen, was apparently doing things around the house when the injury occurred.
“I was just doing normal dad stuff at home,” Downs told ESPNLosAngeles. He said the toe swelled up and “turned purple.”
“It’s obviously very frustrating, but I think it’s just a minor setback,” Downs said.
