So I’ve been doing some digging into the Cardinals numbers from this season, and just for fun started looking at the build of the roster from this year. I wanted to specifically see where a majority of the players came from; the project then morphed into which GM brought more value this year – Walt Jocketty or John Mozeliak?
It may seem silly, since Jocketty has been out with the Cardinals for 5 seasons and with the Reds for almost that full time. But you might be surprised by what I found.
The Cardinals used 45 players this season; the table below has the player, how they were initially acquired, when they were initially acquried, the GM that acquired the player, their batting/fielding WAR (bWAR), their pitching WAR (pWAR), and total WAR (tWAR).
* Salas was purchase from the Mexican League and classified as an amateur free agent.
+ Browning was a minor league Rule V Draftee.
Of the 45 players on the Cardinals roster, Jocketty was responsible for 22 players (49%) and Mozeliak 23 (...

The St. Louis Cardinals franchise has been blessed to have so many great Hall of Fame players wear the Birds on the Bat.While the Cardinals have had many great players over the years, including Lou Brock and Bob Gibson, they do a great job of celebrating their legendary players at the right time. One of those instances came on Thursday night prior to Game Four of the National League...
Carlos Beltran returned to the St. Louis Cardinals' starting lineup Friday night for Game 5 of the NL championship series.
Beltran said his strained left knee felt good enough to play. The All-Star right fielder underwent 2 1/2 hours of treatment during the day, plus acupuncture to increase blood flow to the knee.
Beltran was set to bat second against San Francisco. The Cardinals...
ST. LOUIS - Earlier in the season the Cardinals bullpen probably didnt have too many friends around the city of St. Louis. Now theyd be considered the life of the party.
A bullpen that cost the Cardinals plenty of games during a good chunk of the regular season has become one of their biggest strengths so far in the postseason. Cardinals relievers have just a 2.22 ERA in the playoffs...
St. Louis Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia has visited with three doctors regarding his ailing shoulder, the latest being the famous Dr. James Andrews.
Andrews finally gave Garcia the answer he wanted to hear. The doctor told Garcia that it may not be necessary for Garcia to have surgery to fix the impingement that has caused the left-hander enough pain to remove himself from the...
St. Louis Cardinals weekly chat on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines.
Late Friday afternoon, I joined Ken Miller and Jim Brinson on KXnO FOX Sports Radio 1460 in Des Moines in our regular series to discuss the St. Louis Cardinals, “Cardinal Talk.” This time, we discussed the National League Championship Series Game 5. If the Cardinals win, they can wrap up the series without...
Your browser does not support iframes. The St. Louis Cardinals had plenty to feel good about heading into Friday night's game against the San Francisco Giants, especially pitcher Adam Wainwright. After all, the right-hander helped St. Louis take a 3-1 lead in the NLCS after pitching a gem (7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 K) in Thursday's 8-3 Cardinals victory. It appears as though those...
Adam Wainwright threw seven innings of four-hit ball and the St. Louis Cardinals roughed up Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants in an 8-3 rout Thursday night that gave them a 3-1 lead in the NL championship series.
Matt Holliday, Jon Jay and Yadier Molina had two RBI apiece to lead a 12-hit outburst by a team that batted just .198 through the first three games of the series...
Things were going swimmingly for the St. Louis Cardinals. They held a commanding lead in the NLCS at three games to one and just had to beat Barry Zito for their second straight trip to the World Series. But then serendipity showed up and a hashtag was born and somehow, a three games to two lead does not seem as solid as the series heads back to San Francisco. Can the Giants hold...
ST. LOUIS -- Adam Wainwright had six days to sit around and think about one of the worst starts of his career in one of the biggest games he had ever pitched. In the fifth and deciding game of the NL Division Series against the Washington Nationals, Wainwright put his team in a major hole, but his St. Louis Cardinals completed a historic comeback from that 6-0 deficit. Wainwright...
ST. LOUIS Rap music blared in a loose clubhouse, confidence oozed among players after turning the San Francisco Giants into a crater, and a franchise that has made October shock in vogue earned an unfamiliar role: A favorite charged with snuffing out the remaining light from this National League Championship Series.
"Obviously, that's a great club over there," said...
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- One more win and another bunch of wild-card Cardinals get their chance to repeat.
Adam Wainwright threw seven innings of four-hit ball and St. Louis roughed up Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants in an 8-3 rout Thursday night that gave the Cardinals a 3-1 lead in the NL championship series.
The defending World Series champions can wrap up their second straight...
Lance Lynn fielded the easy comebacker in the fourth inning and quickly turned to try to start a double play at second base.
Instead, his throw caromed off the bag and set the Giants on a path that would send the National League championship series back to San Francisco.
Lynn was dominant through three innings of Game 5 Friday night, but his throwing error was crucial in a four...
ST. LOUIS -- Adam Wainwright had six days to sit around and think about one of the worst starts of his career. In the fifth and deciding game of the NL Division Series against the Washington Nationals, Wainwright struggled, but his St. Louis Cardinals completed a historic comeback from a 6-0 deficit. Wainwright went to the mound Thursday night for the first NL Championship Series...
San Francisco starter Barry Zito escaped a big jam in the second and the Giants and St. Louis Cardinals were scoreless after three innings of Game 5 of the NL championship series Friday night.
Lance Lynn did not allow a hit for the defending champion Cardinals. Up 3-1 in the best-of-seven series, St. Louis is seeking to go to consecutive World Series for the first time since 1967...
Game 5 of the NLCS did not go quite as planned for the St. Louis Cardinals, though that should not have been much of a surprise as the game unfolded. The Redbirds now head back to San Francisco to face the Giants in Game 6 Sunday evening.
Everything started off great for the Cardinals. They weren’t hitting much off Barry Zito, but Lance Lynn held the Giants without even one hit...
