To say Ike Davis has struggled the first two months of the season is a massive understatement.  The nicknames for Ike range from Ike Vegas, to Strike Davis, and even IKKKKKKE Davis.  There is even a twitter account named @didikestrikeout that tweets yes every time Ike, you guessed it, strikes out; which has happened 61 times this season.  The question of whether or not Ike Davis should be sent down to Las Vegas to work on his mechanics has been brought up multiple times over the past month.  There has been contemplation to send Ike to Las Vegas to work on his batting stance, which it is clear that his feet are very far apart.  Lately Ike has shown signs of improvement, could Ike finally be breaking out of the season long slump? The Mets are no stranger to the stuggles of Ike Davis.  Going back to 2012, Ike had very similar struggles.  Last season, Ike hit his lowest point of May on May 22nd.  Davis’ line last year on May 22nd was .156/.212/.291.  Let’s compare those numbers to this year.  Ike has slowly raised his batting average to .168 so far, and his lowest point in May, you guessed it, May 22nd 2013.  On May 22nd of this season, Ike had a line of .147/.236/.245.  Those lines are very similar. Last season, on today’s date, Ike’s line was .166/.230/.284.  This season, his line is .168/.245/.272.  These lines couldn’t be more similar, and it’s fairly eery how similar his struggles are from 2012 to 2013.  If that’s not good enough, let’s go a bit further.  Ike’s power numbers for this year include 5 HRs and 16 RBIs up to this point of the season.  On June 3rd of 2012, Ike Davis had…yup you guessed it, 5 HRs and 21 RBIs, just 5 more RBIs in 2012 than he does this season at this exact point. If you look at Davis’ BAbip from last year to this year, in 2012 at this point in the year was at .207, this year is .221.  In terms of WPA, (Win Probability Added: +/- 1 indicates the wins added or subtracted by the player) Ike was at a -1.3 at this point last year, which means his bat took away 1.3 wins from the Mets up to June 3rd in 2012.  In 2013, and you can’t make this stuff up, his WPA is -1.3. Now determining when exactly Ike will return is hard to say.  Ike has been swinging at a lower rate of pitches outside the strike zone this year.  31% in 2012 and 30% in 2013.  The key for Ike is to continue to be patient.  Pitchers aren’t going to throw him pitches in the zone if they know he’ll swing at a breaking ball in the dirt.  Ike’s turnaround started on June 8th of 2012, so that seems to be the date to look for.  June is also a key month for Ike.  In 2012, Ike hit .318 with 6 HRs in the month of June.  Ike already has 1 HR in June which came yesterday, so the breakout may be coming sooner rather than later.
