Phil Hughes didn't get the win, but he put his best effort into the game. You couldn't really ask for anything more, and it was probably his best outing as a Yankee. Hughes went 8 innings, allowing 5 hits, and only 2 ER. He fanned 6 batters during the game, and all were K'd on his nasty curve. It is filthy. The change in speeds is mixing up the hitters, and they have no idea what they are doing. This is what we expect and what we thought Hughes was made of. It may be a sign of what we will see next year from him. Well let's see some reasons why he is pitching well… Oakley prescription glasses - check no injuries- check confidence- check no stress fracture in his rib- check. He is probably seeing the strike zone now with his new Oakley prescription glasses. haha. Notice he isn't walking the ballpark? Over 8 innings..not allowing a walk is very impressive. Especially compared to what he was doing before. Phil worked his way back from the minors and got his confidence back by dominating down in Scranton. We don't know exactly what was going on earlier in the season, but he was probably pitching while he was injured. So..it might explain his bad start. You can look at this start as a flash of good things to come. Keep the faith. Baseball America didn't rank him #1 overall for no reason..he is very talented. Bobby Abreu put the Yankees ahead with a grand slam in the top of the 10th inning. Sidney Ponson finished off the game with a scoreless 9th inning.
