Phil Hughes threw a simulated game today, progressing in his rehab from a bulging disc earlier this spring. According to the LoHud Yankees Blog, writer Chad Jennings said Hughes threw around 40 pitchers (about two innings) and reported no problems whatsoever.
Hughes has said recently that he is pain free, so his status for the start of the regular season is positive. Jennings reported that Hughes is on track to next appear in a minor league game, possibly saturday. The Yankees are keeping him lined up to start on April 7, the first time the Yankees need a fifth starter. However, should he have to miss a start to make sure he is 100 percent, the Yankees will wait an extra five days to make sure.
Hughes was hit in the backside by a ball up the middle during today’s workout, but quickly laughed it off. Should he continue with no setbacks, look for Hughes to most likely start on April 7 at Detroit.
