The Philadelphia Phillies struck gold when they traded for Hunter Pence midway through the 2011 season. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. – who has a penchant for pulling off trades that big high-profile players to Philly – was able to swap four prospects for Pence, a right-handed power bat the Phillies had so desperately lacked. Pence posted a .324/.394/.560 statline in 54 games with the Phillies, finishing the year with 22 home runs, 97 RBIs, and an .871 OPS. He made the National League All-Star team and placed 16th in the MVP voting. Most importantly, he provided a strong upgrade over Domonic Brown and Ben Francisco, two players who had tried – unsuccessfully – to fill the right field void when Jayson Werth departed for Washington. Pence was a spark in the clubhouse, and helped the Phillies to their fifth straight NL East title. He struggled in the playoffs, going just 4-for-19 (.211) with no extra-base hits but a five-game sample shouldn’t negate the strong performance he had down the stretch....

Amaro’s Patience Saved Phils Money on Rollins

Ruben Amaro is prone to pouncing quickly on players he wants. He inked Jonathan Papelbon for more than $50 million a week before any other free agent closer signed. He locked up Ryan Howard in early 2010 when the writing was on the wall that Howard was set to be the third-best free agent first baseman in the winter of 2011. In Dec. 2008 Amaro gave a 36-year-old Raul...

Ryan Howard’s 2011: The Modern-Day Achilles

This concludes our 2011 Player Review series. Previous posts can be found here. It’s tough to look at Ryan Howard objectively. The highs have been great (he’s one of only five players in major league history to win Rookie of the Year and the MVP in his first two seasons), and the lows have been dreadful. There’s a great tradition in Philadelphia sports of being...

Jimmy Rollins isn't going anywhere Philadelphia Phillies fans, so you can pipe down now. Rollins Returns to Philadelphia

In perhaps the least shocking move of the offseason, the Phillies re-signed Jimmy Rollins over the weekend. While the possibility always existed that he would sign elsewhere, the availability of several shortstop stopgaps drastically reduced his number of suitors. The remaining teams with shortstop vacancies lacked either the payroll flexibility to pay him eight figures per year...

Report: Ed Wade Likely To End Up Back With Phillies As Scout

Richard Justice, correspondent for MLB.com, reported that Ed Wade will end up back with the Phillies as a scout. When the Phillies signed Jim Thome, Josh Verlin wrote a great column on how the addition brought the Phillies full circle. The circle has gone around again if Ed Wade returns. Wade is definitely responsible for a lot of the success of the Phillies franchise. Many of the...

Phillies, shortstop Rollins finalize three-year, $33 million deal

When Jimmy Rollins had the chance to go somewhere else, he just couldn't walk away from the Philadelphia Phillies.

Answering the Question

Yes. The difference between the Yankees and Phillies of recent years is that the Yankees keep mixing in younger players to complement their older stars. They also had Robinson Cano and Brett Gardner emerge as fine players from this strategy. The Phillies also brought along their young players at an older age, think Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. That’s great if the team...
