I have no idea how I missed this, but SPIN Magazine wrote up a short piece about Friday night’s ‘TOTAL 1990s Retro Night’ at the Philadelphia Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park and shared a photoshop of The Phillie Phanatic subbing in for a naked little boy on the cover of Nirvana’s 1991 record Nevermind. Let that sink in for a second.
Sure, MLB is no stranger to photoshopping baseball types into period costume for theme nights. Hell, just last month I went to “Disco Night” at Tropicana Field and saw Roberto Hernandez photoshopped to look like Austin Powers. It works if you imagine it’s Austin Powers from the sequels. But no, nothing I’ve seen has matched the absurdist glory of a naked Phillie Phanatic swimming after a baseball to pay tribute to an album which, I feel like I should remind you, features song titles like ‘Territorial Pissings.’
Here’s the complete graphic, with the biggest-ever hat-tip to SPIN:
I’m going to spend the rest of the day trying to come up with mascot Nirvan

With the ink barely drying on the tale of Roy Halladay‘s successful comeback start against the Diamondbacks, I’m here to suggest something pretty outrageous. The serendipitous aligning of the stars that allowed Halladay to pitch on Sunday was long ago a plan written in ink, Whited Out, and then put back down in Sharpie.
The detour came last Tuesday night, when Doc threw only...
The best result for the Philadelphia Phillies from spring training was the winner of the outfield competition: Domonic Brown. Looking ahead to 2014, the red pinstripes will count on his production. From camp he was one of six athletes, promoted or acquired. How many of the other five players are in tomorrow’s picture? TAL’S HANDY CAPS Welcome, Newcomers: This article represents...
That, if you don't recognize his perfectly sculpted quads or soft-but-masculine cheek bones, is model/baseball player Cole Hamels.
Hamels, who pitches for the Philadelphia Phillies, was modeling at a charity fashion show held by former teammate Shane Victorino. Hamels is known to dabble in modeling, but video of him in action has been difficult to come by. The video above, for...
The Philadelphia Phillies saw the return of pitcher Roy Halladay on Sunday afternoon against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He rejoined the rotation after missing three months recovering from right shoulder surgery. His performance was very encouraging and may give the Phillies something to think about heading into the off season.
As reported by Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, Halladay...
After missing 3 months of the season due to right shoulder surgery, Roy Halladay finally returned to the mound for the Phillies yesterday. The stars aligned in favor of Sunday ticket holders when the Phillies used up originally scheduled starter Tyler Cloyd in Saturday night’s 18 inning, 7-hour marathon loss to the Diamondbacks. Halladay was supposed to make a rehab start in Reading...
The red hot Cole Hamels took on newly-acquired Mets pitcher Daisuke Matsusaka at Citi Field tonight. Hamels remained sharp, and Matsusaka, making just his second start in 2013, showed the rust that he is still shaking off. The Phillies loaded the bases both in the second inning and in the...
Just two days after going 0-7 and giving up 12 runs in 2/3 of an inning, Casper Wells is hitting the disabled list, reports the Phillies. #Phillies OF Casper Wells placed on 15-day DL w/ vision complications. Cole Hamels pitched seven strong innings and handed himself some much-needed run support, sending the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-2 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday night.
Carlos Ruiz homered and the Phillies overcame a couple of mental mistakes by Jimmy Rollins to win for only the third time in 17 road games. Hamels hit a two-run single to help Philadelphia improve...

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown exited Saturday's marathon contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third inning after experiencing soreness in his heel. It later came out that Brown was dealing with an Achilles injury, an ailment that has been hampering him for a few days, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.
Brown was out of the Phillies' starting...

In a sense, Sunday’s Phillies game shouldn’t have been too important. It’s long been apparent the Phillies aren’t going anywhere, or at least, they’re not going where they’d like. The Nationals, too, probably aren’t going anywhere, and while their playoff hopes aren’t quite so dashed, they’re hardly in the picture. And on the mound, the […]

TUESDAY, 8/27: C.J. Wilson vs. Roberto Hernandez: WE CAN HAZ ALL DA WINZ?
I got a hate-chuckle out of this tweet from the Angels PR Twitter account yesterday. Yay! C.J. Wilson has wins across a date range with arbitrary end points! That makes up for everything, right? Forget about the fact that the Angels don't have many wins and that pitching...
