Found January 26, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
Richard Justice of MLB.com is reporting that the Mets will have little to no interest in signing Michael Bourn to a contract if they are unable to protect their first round pick. Here are some of his comments. The New York Mets have no interest in signing free-agent outfielder Michael Bourn if it means surrendering their top 2013 Draft pick, the 11th overall. If you’re wondering why a rebuilding team would invest big bucks in a 30-year-old outfielder regardless of the compensation, that’s a question plenty of people inside the industry are asking. It’s also beside the point. We may never know how interested the Mets ever were in signing Bourn. All we know for now is that they have zero interest if it means losing their top Draft pick. And unless something changes, that’s exactly what would happen. Bourn would be a nice addition to the Mets and would fill many needs that they have, including a leadoff hitter, overall team speed, and a quality proven Major League outfielder. With that...

Michael Bourn’s List of Suitors is Shrinking, Where Will He Land?

Michael Bourn remains unsigned as the start of spring training gets closer and closer. He is the top position player that has not found a home. As the list of possible teams that will make a run for him gets smaller I will try and tell you who will finally give this speedy centerfielder the … Continue reading »

Michael Bourn vs. #11 pick: A 100-player sample

The debate rages on whether or not the Mets should forfeit their first-round pick, the #11 selection overall, in order to sign free agent Michael Bourn. Those in favor of the move point out that Bourn would address a major need for the Mets while those opposed think the club is unlikely to contend while Bourn would be good and that the club would be better off continuing its youth...

Mets-Bourn match looks unlikely

First off, I'll believe the Mets are signing Michael Bourn when I see them introduce him at a news conference and present him with a ceremonial cap and jersey. So, the debate over the type of draft pick they should forfeit for him probably is a pointless exercise. Oh, the Mets' interest in Bourn is serious, according to major league sources. Heaven knows they need outfielders...

Vince Coleman or Roger Cedeno? Or could Michael Bourn be different?

The Mets may or may not be interested in free agent OF Michael Bourn. It is safe to say the amount of interest has to do with how much of a chance the Mets have of having their first round draft pick in this year’s draft (11th overall). While Bourn would give the Mets a major league outfielder they do not have, there may be some questions about how a player who relies solely on...

Rangers Rumors: Texas Unlikely to Sign Michael Bourn, Kyle Lohse

The Texas Rangers are not expected to sign free agent right-hander Kyle Lohse or outfielder Michael Bourn, according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com. Industry sources said Thursday the Rangers don’t expect to sign either free agent pitcher Kyle Lohse or outfielder Michael Bourn. The Rangers have been among the favorites to land both players throughout the offseason...

No Official Request By Mets To Have MLB Protect Their First Round Pick

On Saturday. Richard Justice of MLB.com reported that the Mets will have little to no interest in signing Michael Bourn to a contract if they are unable to protect their first round pick. The New York Mets have no interest in signing free-agent outfielder Michael Bourn if it means surrendering their top 2013 Draft pick, the 11th overall. If you’re wondering why a rebuilding team...

The Mets can’t sign Michael Bourn because they were too awesome last year

Well, the Mets being a “good” team is only part of the problem. For an explanation of why the Mets will probably need to surrender their 2013 first-round draft pick if they do, in fact, agree to a contract with Michael Bourn, Ken Rosenthal is the man to turn to (H/T: MetsBlog). The Mets hold the 11th pick in the draft. But under the new collective-bargaining agreement, only the...

How Does Michael Bourn Play Into The Mets Endgame?

The Mets community is having a field day with Michael Bourn these days. I figured I might as well chime in too. First, let’s establish the basics: The Mets will (most likely) lose the 11th pick in the 2013 first-year player draft if they sign Bourn. Michael Bourn is a Scott Boras client. If the Mets were to sign Bourn, he’s probably going to get a deal in the five-year range...

The Bourn Ultimatum: Should We Or Shouldn’t We?

The Mets want Michael Bourn, but not at the risk of losing their first round draft pick according to John Harper of the Daily News. No surprise there, but even if they could get MLB to protect their pick, are they suddenly going to splurge with the money it would take to sign the Scott Boras client? Or is this just another attempt to dupe fans into thinking that the Mets can still...

Rosenthal: Mets-Bourn match looks unlikely

The rumors of the New York Mets interest in free agent Michael Bourn have been escalating in recent days, some going as far as to say the team would seriously consider a backloaded deal if it wouldn’t cost them their first round pick in 2013.  As I wrote the other day, I just don’t buy it.  We are talking about a 30-year-old free agent outfielder that makes his living with...

Just In Case The Mets Don’t Get Bourn…

This… Adam Rubin spoke to Terry Collins who told him he plans to look at both Justin Turner and Zach Lutz in the outfield this Spring. Turner has not played a game in the outfield in his Major League career and Lutz has never played a game in the outfield in his minor league career. Sounds good to me… I’m very optimistic… Updated 5:00 PM Adam Rubin, who knows a heck...

Examinining The CBA Rule And Predicting The Probable Mets Outcome

Updated 5:00 PM Adam Rubin, who knows a heck of a lot more about this than I do, has spent a great deal of time today examining all the intricacies of the CBA rule that the Mets are petitioning MLB to change. Rubin did a thorough examination of the language in the CBA and concluded that rule is very clear that only 10 picks are protected no matter the circumstances, and that pool...
