New York Mets fans had a lot of concerns coming into the 2012 season, but Ike Davis batting over .200 probably wasn’t one of them.  However, after Davis started the season 0-16 through his first five games he’s had to battle mightily to do just that.  If his .185 batting average in April was frustrating, his .154 average in May was enough to drive fans crazy.  While some thought a demotion to the minors would be the best way for the 25-year-old to work out his problems, the Mets decided to let their first basemen work things out at the big league level, a move which has paid off here in June.

After his 3-5 performance yesterday against the Cubs Davis has finally eclipsed the Mendoza line and is now hitting a cool .201 on the year.

More importantly is that Ike is providing some much needed pop in the middle of New York’s line-up with five June homers to go with his .267 average and .929 OPS on the month.  To top things off, his 20 RBI in June lead all first basemen in the majors.  How’s that for a guy that still isn’t quite batting his weight?

Having a power bat like Ike’s to follow David Wright or Lucas Duda in the line-up is key for the light-hitting Mets.    At times it seems like a challenge to find anyone in the order that can put the ball in the seats, but Ike has always been that guy and if the Mets are going to maintain a fighters chance at claiming the NL East, they’ll need him to continue his June ways through the rest of the summer.
