Recently, Brian Joura at mets360.com posted an interesting piece on whether Carlos Beltran would wear a Mets hat when elected to the Hall of Fame.  The thing that struck me the most about the title was the word “when”. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love Carlos Beltran and was hoping the Mets would re-sign him to an incentive-laden short-term contract, but at the same time, I am a realist.  I knew the Mets would never bring him back.  So being the realist that I am, I’d also like to say that as things currently stand, I don’t think Carlos Beltran will ever be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. There have been many players who have boosted their Hall of Fame credentials after their 34th birthday.  One player who comes to mind is Paul Molitor. At the end of the 1990 season, Paul Molitor was a 34-year-old with the Milwaukee Brewers.  At the time, he had enjoyed a good, but not great, career.  His career numbers (.299 batting average, 1,870 hits,...

Sources: Cards working on Oswalt deal

The St. Louis Cardinals don't have a deal in place to sign free-agent starter Roy Oswalt -- yet -- but they are working diligently to create the necessary payroll flexibility, major-league sources said Sunday. Oswalt likely would jump at an offer of one year and $10 million from the Cardinals, according to a source familiar with his thinking. In recent days, the team has discussed...

Welcome Home, Choo Choo: Fabled Mets’ Catcher Coleman Finally Returns to New York

What comes to mind when I mention “1962?” Is it Casey Stengel’s fractured fairy tales? Is it Marvelous Marv and his unintentional hilarity in the environs of the first base bag? Is it sad-sack starter Roger Craig, a very good pitcher both before and after his Met tenure? Is it the sheer futile enormity of 40-120? When I think of the ’62 Mets, I think of all this, but...

Rally Squirrel Knocks Skip Schumaker Off His Own Baseball Card

As the St. Louis Cardinals unexpected postseason success continued a local rodent became famous, the Rally Squirrel was born. It was during Skip Schumaker's at-bat against Roy Oswalt when the squirrel made his first appearance, something Topps decided to celebrate. Schumaker's devoted fans might be disappointed when they collect the newest Schumaker card, he isn't even...

Skip Schumaker's New Topps Card Is Awesome

This is awesome. Remember the Rally Squirrel, who gained so much attention during last year's Cardinals playoff run? Topps has dragged it back into the limelight, prominently featuring the squirrel on Skip Schumaker's Topps card for this season. Don't worry Schumaker fans, this is just going to be a short print and not the more commonly distributed card. I'm not much...

Mets Notes: Bucholz To Skip 2012, Ankiel Still On Mets Radar, Oberkfell To Bears

Reliever Taylor Buchholz, who has dealt with anxiety and depression issues throughout his career, plans to skip the 2012 season, agent David Pasti told ESPN New York. Buchholz signed with Mets last offseason and went on the DL on June 2 with what was announced as shoulder fatigue. But a month later both Buchholz and the Mets jointly announced that he was dealing with the emotional...

Around the Horn: Cardinals catchers

It may not be left field at Fenway Park or center field at Yankee Stadium, but playing catcher in St. Louis comes with a certain set of expectations and a healthy legacy.

Patterson: Not Done Yet

Mets Fans: A Nation in Crisis...Again

The New York Mets fans are a proud people. They have to be. Their team has only won two World Series titles in 50 years and they only have one player inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame. They don't have as much to hold on to as fans of other franchises. As a Mets fan I can completely understand this logic; Be proud of what you have. They have had a long history of bad moments...

Around the Horn: Cardinals bullpen

Bullpens tend to be confounding things. Few positions see more volatility from year to year than relief pitchers, and that's certainly been true for the Cardinals.

Brewers give Patterson minor league deal (AP)

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed outfielder Corey Patterson to a minor league contract. Patterson played 44 games for the St. Louis Cardinals last season, batting .157 with three RBIs.
