On Friday, May 3, the San Francisco Giants will pay tribute to some of the great city’s favorite sons, Metallica, with a tribute night at AT&T Park. While Metallica technically was formed in Los Angeles in 1981, the band relocated to San Francisco Bay Area early on at the request of bassist Cliff Burton (the more you know). As part of the buildup to the festivities, Giants pitcher Barry Zito, an accomplished musician in his own right, met up with the guys from Metallica to do a bit of jamming with the band. The jam session kicked off with Zito accompanying the band on “Fade to the Black,” from their second LP Ride the Lightning and one of most revered songs from Metallica’s extensive catalog: Pretty awesome stuff. And while Metallica is getting long in the tooth — and as a consequence, reminds me that I am getting quite long in the tooth as well (I still remember buying Masters of Puppets on cassette at Musicland 26 years ago — yes I am that old) –  the band remains one of the most influential and loved bands of the past 30 years. And, from what I understand, can still deliver live, which in this day and age of pumped-in studio music providing a sterile backdrop for doctored or lip-synched vocals and all of that other malarkey, is a rare thing indeed.
