There was nothing to suggest the Indians were going to get the performance they received from Ubaldo Jimenez on Tuesday night.

Cleveland was happy to see it however, as Jimenez pitched into the seventh inning, allowing one run as the Indians beat the Detroit Tigers 4-2 at Comerica Park.

Jimenez, who has been a disappointment this season, came into the game facing one of his least favorite opponents, and pitching where he least likes to pitch -- on the road. Jimenez had made four career starts vs. the Tigers in Detroit, and his record in those games was 0-4 with a 9.78 ERA.

In his first five road start this season, against any opponent, Jimenez was 2-3 with a 9.00 ERA. But Tuesday night, it was a different Jimenez. A much better Jimenez. A big reason for the improvement was that he had much better command of his pitches.

In 6 2/3 innings, Jimenez only walked one batter -- the last batter he faced. In his first 10 starts this season, Jimenez averaged nearly seven walks per nine innings. He came into the game leading the American League in walks.

"This is a step in the right direction. That's something he and Justin (Masterson) have been struggling with," manager Manny Acta said of Jimenez's high number of walks.

The Indians need both Masterson and Jimenez to pitch better. Both of them have ERAs over 5.00, but both of them have pitched well in their last starts.
