Stutes may need surgery. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro spoke to the media today and gave a bevy of injury updates. Some were good, others were not. PITCHERS: -Roy Halladay is symptom-free during his throwing program, which is a huge positive. Seems like the 6-8 week timetable is still very much in play. -Michael Stutes could have exploratory elbow surgery, Amaro said. His nagging shoulder injury has not progressed the way they had hoped. Doesn’t sound like Stutes will be back anytime soon. -David Herndon will almost certainly need Tommy John surgery. He’s headed to see Dr. James Andrews on Monday to get the final word, but by all accounts, he’s going to have ligament replacement surgery. -And finally, Justin De Fratus is going to throw off a mound on Thursday and reportedly his balky elbow is feeling good, according to the Phillies GM. HITTERS Howard could be in rehab games soon. -Chase Utley is DH’ing tonight and batting third. Todd Zolecki of MLB.com says there is a chance...

Phillies must sell GM on being a buyer at trade deadline

For Charlie Manuel, Christmas Day might as well be July 29 instead of December 25. In each of the last three years, Manuel has seen general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. making a pre-trade deadline deal on that date. In 2009, Amaro reeled in Cliff Lee. In 2010, it was Roy Oswalt who arrived. In 2011, Hunter Pence followed Oswalt's path from Houston to Philadelphia. But as the Phillies...

So in the second inning on Tuesday night -- after the left-hander walked opposing pitcher Josh Outman with one out -- there was a sense that it was happening again. At that point, Hamels retreated from the mound and visibly took a deep breath. "You learn...
