Here's a running list of injury updates around the Major Leagues: – First baseman Ryan Howard is ready for action and will begin his rehab assignment on Thursday according to John Finger of CSNPhilly.com. Howard though, isn't sure when he will rejoin the Phillies. – Left hander Jorge de la Rosa missed most of the 2011 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and according to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post he might not pitch in 2012 at all. Saunders writes that De la Rosa will be shut down until “at least September” due to “continuing problems in his elbow.” – Daniel Hudson, will probably require Tommy John surgery after an MRI study showed that he has a UCL tear reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Howard’s Absence Has Killed the Myth

Ryan Howard hadn’t run the bases in a competitive situation until arriving in Lakewood on Thursday. He hadn’t hit in a game that counted. Until Friday, he hadn’t fielded at game speed. That the Phillies chose to allow Howard to play first base one night after he made his rehab debut was a positive sign. Howard in his postgame press conference Thursday said repeatedly that...

Ryan Howard Rehab Notes & Quotes

Ryan Howard continued to test his recovering Achilles tendon as he rehabbed for the second time in as many nights with the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws on Friday. The 32-year-old slugger has been sidelined following off-season surgery to repair the tendon he ruptured in the final at bat of the Phillies’ 2011 postseason. In game action on Friday, facing highly regarded Nationals...

Phillies' Howard may start rehab assignment Thursday

Second baseman Chase Utley is expected to return to the Phillies lineup this week, and Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard apparently is close to starting his rehab assignment. Howard will be in Philadelphia for "functional testing" on his Achilles tendon on Wednesday, according to a press release. If those tests indicate his Achilles is strong enough, Howard will start...

Howard nears return to Phils lineup

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says Ryan Howard has been making progress in his rehabilitation for an Achillies injury, and the first baseman could make his return to the major leagues this weekend. ''He's getting close,'' Amaro said Thursday before Philadelphia faced the New York Mets. Howard has participated in six rehab games with Class A Lakewood...

D-backs' Hudson pulled with tight forearm

ATLANTA (AP) -- Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Daniel Hudson left his start against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night with tightness in his right forearm. Hudson, who was on the disabled list from April 21 to May 27 with a right shoulder impingement, was removed in the second inning. He gave up five runs and seven hits in 1 2-3 innings. After giving up five hits and three...

Daniel Hudson Leaves With Forearm Injury

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Daniel Hudson left tonight’s game in the second inning with forearm tightness. Hudson allowed five runs on seven hits in just one and two-thirds innings before leaving the game with the injury. Josh Collementer relieved Hudson with a 1-0 count to Braves catcher Brian McCann. Hudson told reporters after the game that he has been dealing with...

The Big Piece Takes Big Step

Photo Courtesy of Renee Cendrowski. It may not have been his biggest test, but it was a test nonetheless, and one Ryan Howard passed. Ryan Howard went 2 for 4 last night with the Lakewood Blue Claws and drove in three runs. Howard had a pair of singles, grounded out, struck out and hit a sacrifice fly in his 5 plate appearances. After the game, Howard said it felt good to get into...

Phillies' Ryan Howard Begins Rehab Assignment With Strong Performance for BlueClaws

Photos: Philliedelphia/Frank Klose It was a sight so familiar but also so very different.  Ryan Howard returned to his old stomping grounds at First Energy Park in Lakewood, New Jersey to begin his rehab assignment as he works his way back to the Phillies.  Howard is still a fan favorite from his dominant 2002 performance which led to the team retiring his #29 jersey last year...

Hudson seeks second opinion; surgery likely

PHOENIX Daniel Hudson did not know it at the time, but he may have been staring directly at his future in Atlanta last Tuesday. Braves right-hander Tim Hudson, also on the mound that night, has won 41 games, made an All-Star team and finished fourth in NL Cy Young voting since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2008. Daniel Hudson is expected to undergo a similar procedure after...

Hudson pitches Braves past Diamondbacks

ATLANTA (AP) -- Tim Hudson answered manager Fredi Gonzalez's call for improved starts from Atlanta's rotation and the Braves opened their longest homestand of the season by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-1 on Tuesday night. Hudson (6-3) allowed one run and seven hits in eight innings. He had seven strikeouts. Freddie Freeman had three hits and drove in two runs, Chipper...

Arizona's Drew returning, but Hudson could be out long term

Tuesday was a day of changes for the Arizona Diamondbacks -- two expected and one forced. Shortstop Stephen Drew met the D-backs in Atlanta after finishing a 20-day rehab assignment and will be activated Wednesday, when he will start against Atlanta right-hander Tommy Hansen, manager Kirk Gibson said. Drew has not appeared in a major league game since July 20, 2011, the day he...

Poor start does in D-backs in loss to Braves

ATLANTA (AP) -- Tim Hudson answered manager Fredi Gonzalez's call for improved starts from Atlanta's rotation and the Braves opened their longest homestand of the season by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-1 on Tuesday night. Hudson (6-3) allowed one run and seven hits in eight innings. He had seven strikeouts. Freddie Freeman had three hits and drove in two runs, Chipper...

Utley Hits Homerun in Last Tune-Up, Howard heading to Rehab Assignment?

Chase Utley homered in his last rehab stint tonight at AAA Lehigh Valley. He went 2 for 5 with a single as well. He did strike out twice. The Iron Pigs won the game 10-3 over the Rochester Red Wings. He should return to the major league lineup tomorrow vs. the Pirates where it will most likely be a "pitching by committee" game for the Phils due to the double header on Sunday...

Damn Y’all Hudson!

In a Hudson vs. Hudson battle, Tim won on a technicality as Daniel Hudson left the game with what seemed to be a forearm injury.  To add insult to injury, he left the game after giving up 5 ER on 7 hits in 1 2/3 IP.  With a ghastly 7.35 ERA in 45 IP this year, injury or not, it’s time to cut Daniel Hudson from mixed leagues.  He looked primed to build upon a solid 2011 but so...

The 2012 Minor League Report – Week 13

The Arizona Diamondbacks lost another starting pitcher in their rotation with Daniel Hudson done for the season and facing Tommy John surgery. For now the team is moving Josh Collmenter into the rotation but that could just be short-term coverage until the All-Star break. I would look at grabbing Tyler Skaggs as a play for the second half of the season. Skaggs has a 2.84 ERA at...
