By Gregory Bird, AngelsWin.com Columnist --
Welcome to the new Inside The Numbers Feature. I’m Greg and I’ll be taking over this AngelsWin.com feature for the 2013 season. I hope to provide the same high quality analysis that AngelsWin.com is known for. My articles will be focused on the current Angels roster through the lens of sabermetrics. I also hope to give insight into how the Angels’ front office might be thinking when they make their decisions. I’m sorry, up front, that I may sound like a JeDi apologist (to be fair I really like his moves so far.) But what I really want to do is to dig a little deeper and understand better the game and team we all love. I don’t claim to be an expert but I do want to spark intelligent, thoughtful conversation based on the facts of the game.
So, why did JeDi let Torii go and sign Hamilton to a 5 year deal? This question has been kicked around this offseason. It is a fair question. Much of the analysis I’ve read says that Josh is...

Mike Trout’s agent upset over Angels new contract to slugger
Getty Images Mike Trout had a historic rookie campaign in 2012 so the Los Angeles Angels did what anyone would do in their position, they renewed his contract for $20,000 over the league minimum. The 20-year-old Trout has little say over his contract for the upcoming season even if he finished seco

Mike Trout Knows His Role with Los Angeles Angels in 2013
A hot topic recently is what Mike Trout‘s 2013 salary will be as he mans the outfield for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. After having a historic season, Trout’s agent asked the organization to compensate his client fairly, based on his MLB service time (1 year, 70 days). However, the final number wasn’t exactly what Craig Landis was hoping for.
Saying Trout had a breakout...

Mike Trout’s Agent Disappointed by Angels’ Decision to Renew Outfielder’s Contract Without Significant Raise
TEMPE, Ariz. — The Los Angeles Angels renewed the contract of AL Rookie of the Year Mike Trout for $510,000, prompting an angry response from the outfielder’s agent.
Craig Landis said his client was disappointed with the decision announced Saturday. The salary is $20,000 above the major league minimum.
“During the process, on behalf of Mike, I asked only that the Angels compensate...
Mike Trout Is (Suddenly) Everyday People
Opposing pitchers and managers already don’t treat Mike Trout like just any other 21-year-old, so why do the Los Angeles Angels think it is okay to do so? Control should never equal comfort, a lesson it seems could be learned soon in Anaheim. Now, Trout seems to be a good enough guy. He plays hard [...]The post Mike Trout Is (Suddenly) Everyday People appeared first on The Sports Fan Journal.
Mike Trout’s Agent Says his Contract for $510K is Unfair
I don’t think anyone who witnessed Mike Trout’s phenomenal season last year for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, can disagree with his agent Craig Landis’ assertion that his client is going to be grossly underpaid for the approaching baseball season.
Under the MLB’s collective bargaining agreement, in most cases, players aren’t arbitration eligible until they have three...
Albert Pujols Says He Should Be Ready for Opening Day
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Angels star Albert Pujols says that he should be in the lineup when the season starts on April 1st. Albert had surgery on his right knee in October and has been working with the team this Spring Training. Pujols has been taking batting practice, fielding ground balls, and doing some light jogging to stay in shape for the upcoming season...
How Fair is MLB’s Salary Scale?
Over the weekend, the Angels renewed Mike Trout‘s contract, opting to pay him $510,000 — $20,000 over the league minimum — for the 2013 season. Because of how great Trout was last year, this has caused some backlash, including these comments from Trout’s agent: “I asked only that the Angels compensate Mike fairly for his historic 2012 season, given his service time,...

Mike Trout and a Relative Pittance
When’s the last time you looked up a player’s pre-arbitration salary figures? Is the answer “never”? The answer is probably “never”. Before a player is arbitration-eligible, he makes almost nothing, sticking in the realm of six figures. We think about salaries when salaries get bigger, because that’s when they start to matter for real. We almost never end up talking...
Don’t forget to thank Pujols for Wacha
When Albert Pujols made his decision to join the Arte Moreno family, also known as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the first baseman broke the heart of many a St. Louis Cardinals fan.
As his injuries mount, the wisdom of Pujols’ mammoth contract is being questioned more and more often. Nine years of potential second-guessing remain. No longer is Pujols generally considered...
