Found July 20, 2013 on The Fantasy Fix:
Jason Castro first flew onto my radar after I read a piece predicting his breakout at Beyond the Boxscore. I bookmarked it just to check back on it at the end of the season to see how they did. Plenty of people do bold predictions lists, but this one seemed a little different. There was a track record, albeit a small one, of success and I thoroughly enjoyed the analytics process they took in order to peg Jason Castro in the piece. A little more than half the season is over at this point and Jason Castro has been a pretty damn good catcher. Filling your catcher slot in the lineup isn’t as difficult as it used to be; at least on draft day. Injuries happen though, and they open the doors for players like Jason Castro. I want to dig a little deeper into him and see how his value projects to hold up in fantasy leagues going in to the second half. Castro has put up a .269/.331/.475 line through his first 81 games played in 2013. Unfortunately his RBI and R totals aren’t very good due to t...

Astros rookie Brandon Barnes hits for cycle

Congratulations to Brandon Barnes for becoming the second player in the majors this season to hit for the cycle.  Mike Trout was the first to do it also against the Seattle Mariners back in May.  The rookie, Barnes, was the eighth player in Astros’ history to accomplish such a feat.  Luke Scott was the last Astros to do it back in 2006. Barnes hit a home run in his first...

Astros manager Porter defends Bedard

Houston manager Bo Porter is defending Erik Bedard's decision to remove himself from Saturday night's game against Seattle with a no-hitter in the seventh inning because of a high pitch count and says he wouldn't have let the left-hander stay in much longer. Bedard chose to leave the game with one out in the seventh because he had 109 pitches, saying ''I'...

Brandon Barnes Gives Houston Astros Fans Something to Cheer About; Hits for the Cycle

It has not been a fantastic season for Houston Astros center fielder Brandon Barnes. Heck, it hasn't been a great season for the Houston Astros, but it always darkest before the dawn, right? Even though the Astros lost to the Seattle Mariners 10-7 Friday night they still got a peek at greatness thanks to Barnes. Why? Because the man became the first Houston player to hit for...

Bedard loses despite hitless start

Thanks for the help, pals. You couldn't blame Erik Bedard if that was his sarcastic greeting to his teammates on Saturday night. The Astros starter went 6 1/3 innings against the Mariners and gave up zero hits. But he was charged with three runs and took the loss in Houston's 4-2 defeat . Bedard struck out 10 and walked five, and it was walks plus some shaky work behind...

Astros Rumors: Bud Norris trade market 'heating up'

Matt Garza is the starting pitcher on the trade market that is garnering the most attention, but another pitcher is starting to get some more attention from the media, fans and other ball clubs. Astros pitcher Bud Norris, who is many teams' plan B to Matt Garza, has had his trade market intensify, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. He says that trade talks have been '...

Some potential Norris fits: #sfgiants...

Clemens chats with Astros pitchers

Roger Clemens met with Houston's pitching staff, encouraging the young players to ''keep their spirits up'' as they navigate through this difficult season. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner and special assistant to Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow talked to the pitchers after batting practice on Saturday. ''It's tough,'' he said. '...

Report: Red Sox Interested in Bud Norris, But Believe Astros’ Current Asking Price Is Too High

Clay Buchholz is expected to return at some point, but there’s still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the ace, so the Red Sox could consider diving into the starting pitching market before the trade deadline. WEEI.com’s Alex Speier reports that the Red Sox are interested in Astros pitcher Bud Norris, and perhaps other starters like him. Speier writes that Norris represents...

Astros give up 1 hit, lose to M's

Michael Saunders got Seattle's only hit with a two RBI double with two outs in the seventh inning to lift the Mariners to a 4-2 win over the Houston Astros on Saturday night. Erik Bedard (3-7) pitched 6 1-3 innings of no-hit ball before he was replaced by Jose Cisnero, who walked Mike Zunino with two outs before the double by Saunders put Seattle ahead 4-2. The long fly ball...

Astros pitcher pulls himself from no-hitter, then gets hung with loss

Every pitcher dreams of competing for a no-hitter in the major leagues.  They imagine experiencing the euphoria of being on the mound for the last few innings, home crowd going crazy after you get your 10th strikeout, being carried off the field glove lifted in the air in triumph.  Erik Bedard was experiencing all that (except the final glory) when he told his manager “I’m...

Dugout Digest - the quietest cycle ever

Brandon Barnes of the Astros hit for the cycle last night, and you probably didn't even know that he did. But of course you didn't know: the Astros lost to the Mariners 10-7. Barnes, Houston's seven hitter, drove in just a pair of runs in his excellent performance. And not only did the Mariners end up losing the game, but they were trailing 9-3 in the eighth inning, so...

Athletics-Astros Preview

No team has enjoyed the addition of the Houston Astros to the AL more than the Oakland Athletics. The Athletics have won all nine meetings this year with their newest division rivals, and will likely again be without slugger Yoenis Cespedes in Monday night's opener of a three-game series in Houston. Oakland (57-41) has outscored baseball's worst team 68-31 this year, and...
