Found February 14, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
With Tuesday’s news that Frank Francisco was being shut down due to elbow inflammation, and Parnell was in line to be the Mets new closer, I began to think about some other possible closer options. Mets fans know Jeurys Familia from being ranked on the teams list of top prospects for the past few seasons. The Dominican Republic native started last season at Triple-A as a starting pitcher, but finished in the Majors as a reliever. This season Sandy Alderson has already made it clear that the righty will strictly be a reliever, but as of right now his role is not yet defined. He still has to earn a spot on the roster, which he could do out of camp. If he doesn’t not earn a spot out of the gate, he will likely be one of the fist players called up to fill a need in the pen. So, with that said, does Familia have the potential to be a quality late-inning reliever for the Mets this season, and possibly earn himself some save chances? Armed with an impressive heater in the mid-90′s and the ...

Mets Shutdown Frank Francisco With Elbow Inflammation

Updated by HoJo on 2/12 Frank Francisco has been shutdown indefinitely according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. This was one of the fears going into Spring Training after Francisco underwent December surgery to remove a bone spur in his right elbow. Manager Terry Collins said today that the inflammation was not unexpected. In a press conference that was televised on SNY, Collins...

Door once again opens for Bobby Parnell to close

Yesterday it was revealed that the incumbent closer for the New York Mets entering the 2013 season, Frank Francisco, was going to be shut down due to elbow inflammation.  Francisco is in the second year of a 2-year/$12 million contract the Mets handed to him during free agency prior to last season.  Needles to say, that has not worked out very well for Sandy Alderson, who has not...

Which Mets Could Be On Trading Block This Season?

The Mets should save themselves the aggravation and DL Frank Francisco when the season starts and have the roster spot filled by somebody else. That would enable Bobby Parnell to have the closer job unencumbered. Having him train for the role in Spring Training only to have it pulled from him at the last minute would be bad for clubhouse karma. And, if Parnell doesn’t cut it, then...

Mets Closer Frank Francisco Has a Setback

It seems to be starting early, even for the Mets.  This franchise has struggled with erratic to lousy bullpen performances and an inability to keep a healthy lineup.  The latest news is bad for both lists.  New York Mets reliever Frank Francisco has been shut down, just days after Mets Manager Terry Collins had re-anointed the 33-year old righty as closer. Francisco is...

Making sense of the Mets’ closer issues

It was revealed this week that incumbent Mets’ closer Frank Francisco has elbow inflammation and his availability for Opening Day is in doubt. Apparently, Francisco was not able to rehab properly after he had surgery this offseason to remove bone spurs in his elbow because of personal issues. “So, here we go again!”-says every Mets’ fan nationwide. That being said, another...

Updated by Joe D. According to Mike Puma of the NY Post, after telling reporters that Frank Francisco has been shut down due to inflammation in his right elbow, Mets manager Terry Collins told Puma that “he wants Bobby Parnell to take over as the team’s closer.” “We keep talking about 2014 … why not get a head start?” Collins said. “I’m not panicking, but you’ve...

Plenty Of Mets Who Could Be Traded This Season Including Daniel Murphy

The Mets should save themselves the aggravation and DL Frank Francisco when the season starts and have the roster spot filled by somebody else. Collins wants Bobby Parnell to be Mets closer

With Frank Fransisco dealing with elbow inflammation, Mets manager Terry Collins would like to see Bobby Parnell assume the role of closer. Collins told WFAN on Tuesday that he plans to give Parnell a shot at being the teams closer. Parnell has notched 13 saves over the last two seasons but has done better as a setup man. Last season Parnell finished with a 2.49 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP...

Mets Shouldn’t Be Surprised At Francisco Injury And Losing Bourn

Two days into camp and the Mets have already taken two shots. The first was inevitable, that Michael Bourn signed elsewhere. Come to think of it, so was the second when Frank Francisco was shut down with elbow inflammation. The proviso was Francisco would be the closer if healthy and he is clearly not. Terry Collins told us that it may be a while before Francisco throws a baseball...

Relapse Or Relief?

The Mets have been the very definition of a team that depends on "if everything goes right". If you've learned nothing else out of life, you've learned that not everything goes right. The Mets have certainly learned that in their recent history, and it only took until 2013 for the first thing to go wrong, as their relief pitcher who moonlights as a closer, Frank...
