Cubs 34 year old starter Ryan Dempster had a challenging 2011 season.  On the bright side he made 34 starts and topped 200 innings pitched for the third straight season.  Unfortunately, he allowed 211 hits and finished the season with a 10-14 record and 4.80 ERA.  Dempster’s 2011 strikeout rate  (8.5 per 9 innings) and walk rate (3.6 per 9 innings) remained consistent with his performance from 2008 through 2010 so it’s possible that he was a victim of bad luck last season.  He also allowed a career high 9.4 hits per 9 innings in 2011, which could be partly attributed to the Cubs lackluster defense. Dempster has pitched at least 200 innings and struck out at least 172 batters in each of the past four seasons. He is signed for the 2012 season for $14 million. He will be eligible for free agency after the season and will likely be a candidate to be traded prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. If the Cubs can improve their defense in the upcoming season Demp...

Cubs get their (first base) man.

Ever since the Padres acquired Yonder Alonso from the Reds on December 17, there has been rumors that the Cubs were after the Padres other first base prospect Anthony Rizzo. Well today, the Cubs finally landed him and righthander Zach Cates in exchange for Andrew Cashner and Kyung-Min Na. Rizzo was ranked as the Padres top prospect by Baseball America after hitting .331/.404...

RIZZO MANIA Will Run Wild on the Windy City

Anthony Rizzo was traded with pitcher Zach Cates to the Cubs in exchange for pitcher Andrew Cashner and Kyung-Min Na on Friday.  While we had plenty of fun with the whole #RIZZOMANIA thing, it was clear that after the Padres acquired Yonder Alonso the writing was on the wall. It wasn’t long ago that the Padres traded all-star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox...

Cubs Trade Boosts Nats’ Chances for Fielder

In a move that increases the Nationals’ odds of signing Prince Fielder — thereby decreasing the Phillies’ chances of winning the NL East so comfortably next season – the Padres on Friday traded mega-prospect first baseman Anthony Rizzo to the Cubs for righthanded fireballer Andrew Cashner and slap-hitting 19-year-old South Korean outfielder Kyung-Min Na. (See CSNChicago...

Andrew Cashner next to go in Cubs’ rebuilding

So much for the future the Cubs envisioned when the “Killer C’s” — Andrew Cashner, Tyler Colvin and Starlin Castro — broke into the big leagues as promising rookies in 2010. In fact, not even the Cubs are offering much in the way of vision or promises for a 2012 season that appears murkier with every move the new front office makes. Less than a month after Colvin was traded...

Could Soriano be next Cub to go?

Is an Alfonso Soriano trade realistic for the Cubs? It seems unlikely but there is a chance Theo Epstein will follow Wednesday’s deal for Carlos Zambrano with one for the left fielder, who is owed $54 million.

Heyman On Rizzo, Rangers, Webb, Jackson

The Cubs acquired Anthony Rizzo from the Padres today, but they weren’t the only team with interest in the first base prospect. The Indians, Blue Jays and Rays also had some interest in Rizzo, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Here are more notes from Heyman (they all go to Twitter): The Rangers would like to lock Mike Napoli, Josh Hamilton, Mike Adams and Colby...
