Hi Cubs fans! It’s so nice to (officially) be back, now that the season has started. I missed baseball SO much, as I’m sure you all did too. Well, let’s get into the recap of the Cubs’ first series of the 2013 Season. 4/01: W Cubs 3, Pirates 1 W: Samardzija (1-0) L: Burnett (0-1) SV: Fujikawa (1) In his first Opening Day start, Jeff Samardzija dominated the Pirates.  After settling down from a tough first inning, he looked as if he had done this before, retiring 23 of the next 25 batters he faced.  Samardzija pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out nine. A.J. Burnett also had a good outing for the Pirates; he struck out ten Cub batters, his only mistake coming early when he gave up a home run to Anthony Rizzo. Rizzo hit the two-run homer in his first at-bat of the season with Starlin Castro on base. Carlos Marmol came in for the save but was pulled and replaced by James Russell and one batter later Kyuji Fujikawa came in and closed it out and got the save.
