PLAYERS: Jackie Robinson
Before Jackie Robinson was a blue "42" in every major league stadium he was a civil rights icon. Before that he was a Major League MVP, All Star, Rookie of the Year and World Series champion. Before that he was an officer in the U.S. Army who got court martialed for refusing to move to the back of an Army bus. But before all that Robinson was one of the greatest athletes in UCLA history. Robinson transferred to UCLA in 1939 and became the first Bruin ever to letter in four sports: football, basketball, baseball and track. He won the 1940 NCAA long jump championship and left college to play professional football, always referring to baseball as his "worst sport" while in Westwood. In honor of Jackie Robinson Day USC released this video of Robinson juking Trojans out of their jockstraps in this famous 1939 0-0 tie between the undefeated rivals:

Video: USC Releases Footage Of Jackie Robinson Playing Football For UCLA

Jackie Robinson, football star? Yup, once upon a time. USC released footage of a game in 1939 between the Trojans and the UCLA Bruins, Robinson’s team, which resulted in a 0-0 tie but had some pretty good action. In the video, you can see Robinson break a few tackles and launch a vicious hit to pop the ball loose when USC was threatening to score.  As great as Robinson looks on...

Rare Footage Of Jackie Robinson Playing Football For UCLA

USC was kind enough to post some rare footage of Jackie Robinson playing football for UCLA in honor of Jackie Robinson Day (April 15th). I was surprised to find out that there was footage of Jackie playing college sports, let alone playing football. The footage shows Jackie playing for the Bruins in 1939 during the USC-UCLA ‘Crosstown Showdown.’ Jackie is sporting the #28. The...

Jackie Robinson UCLA Football Highlights From 1939 Show Baseball Star’s Incredible Athleticism (Video)

Jackie Robinson was a darn-good baseball player, but if he chose not to pursue America’s Pastime, it’s pretty obvious that he had a solid backup plan in football. On Monday, a UCLA-USC highlight from 1939 hit the internet. In it, Robinson (No. 28 on UCLA) can be seen dominating on both offense and defense. Robinson was one of four black players on the 1939 squad, along with...

Ben Chapman: borderline Hall of Fame path to all around bad guy

If you have seen the movie “42″, you will see former Philadelphia Phillies manager Ben Chapman as the evilest character in the entire film. While Jackie Robinson suffers from all types of racism and abuse, it is Chapman who is the most vocal and vulgar in his actions. The movie shows Chapman yelling racial slurs to Robinson he bats, nearly getting Robinson to respond. Finally...

New Era makes Jackie Robinson-dedicated commercial (Video)

With the movie "42" premiering last week and Jackie Robinson day being held through-out Major League Baseball this week, the fine folks over at New Era ball caps released their own commercial dedicated to the Brooklyn Dodger. The spot was called "First Changes Everything" and features many actors (young and old) tipping their hats to the legendary player:

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Carl Crawford put his own personal spin on Jackie Robinson Day during a game against the San Diego Padres on Monday. As you can see from the photo above, he wore mismatched Jackie Robinson commemorative cleats. Crawford wanted to show off both the blue and white Jordan PEs that he, Jimmy Rollins and CC Sabathia received with the No. 42 on the back to...

Denard Robinson redeems himself with first pitch at Michigan baseball game

After a horrible first pitch last week before the Detroit Tigers-Toronto Blue Jays game that skipped before home plate and landed on the SportsCenter Not Top Ten, Denard Robinson was given a chance to redeem himself at the Michigan-Notre Dame baseball game on Tuesday.  It’s too bad that this successful first pitch won’t get the same publicity that his bad one did, because this...

Game 13 Recap: Jackie Robinson Night Goes Awry. Padres 6, Dodgers 3

A common theme over the early part of this season for the Los Angeles Dodgers has been this: plenty of base runners, not enough runs. The Dodgers outhit the Padres 12-9 tonight.  On most nights, if your team gets 12 hits, you have to like your chances of winning.  But when your team is the best team in the league hitting with the bases empty and the worst team in the league hitting...

Dodgers aim to bounce back against Padres

After a disappointing loss last night on Jackie Robinson night, the Dodgers will look to get things back on track in game two of the three game series with the San Diego Padres. This will be the Dodgers’ first look at what life will be like for the next couple months without Zack Greinke in their rotation. That starting pitching depth is looking pretty good now, right? After...

Sandwiched between the Jackie Robinson Day ceremonies and a stirring rendition of "Sweet Caroline," Ivan Nova tried last night to get his first win of the season.Whenever Nova takes the mound, you always have to wonder which pitcher has shown up: Ivan The Terrible or Supernova. For a while there, it looked terrible. However, it never got super. Nova eventually settled somewhere...
