Boston Red Sox
After starting the season slowly, it seemed really unfair that Jacoby Ellsbury suffered a groin injury just as he was beginning to make a real impact for the Red Sox. However, after five games riding the pine, the Red Sox’ leadoff hitter is back in center field and atop the lineup.
Jonny Gomes hits behind Ellsbury in the No. 2 hole. Although Gomes may not be a conventional choice to hit second, his on-base proclivities make him well-suited to create some scoring opportunities ahead of Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Mike Napoli. Gomes may not be a speedster, but he can take a walk with the best of them.
Aside from that, Jose Iglesias moves over to shortstop after seeing some time at third base (the spot Pedro Ciriaco is occupying Thursday), while David Ross gets the start behind the plate.
Ross will be guiding Jon Lester on the mound, who looks to win his seventh game of the season despite yielding at least four earned runs in each of his last three starts.
For the Rangers, phenom J...

David Ortiz provided Exhibit A in Boston Strong on Thursday night.
The slugger has been vocal about his support for the city in the days since the Boston Marathon bombings. He was behind one of the most memorable moments of that turbulent week, and since then, he’s kept up the tribute the best way he knows how — by knocking the ball out of the park.
Ortiz did that in the most...
Jonny Gomes is no stranger to throwing caution to the wind while playing the outfield. As it turns out, he has a good reason — or five — for playing so fearlessly.
“I’ve almost died five times,” Gomes told WEEI.com.
That’s right. Gomes, one of the most charismatic individuals in the Red Sox’ very loose clubhouse, has apparently stared death in the face five times. And...
Teddy StankiewiczWith their second pick in the MLB Draft, the Red Sox continued their pitching obsession by selecting 6'4", 215-pound Teddy Stankiewicz. The big right-hander struck out 70 batters in 60 2/3 innings this year and sported an ERA of 2.52 for JUCO Seminole State (Okla.). He was a second-round pick of the Mets last year, but decided to take the junior college...
Walking somebody to bring up David Ortiz — that just sounds wrong.
Ortiz made it look wrong, too, on Thursday night. After seeing Dustin Pedroia intentionally walked in front of him, Ortiz walloped the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the ninth inning into the Rangers’ bullpen. The jack scored three runs and gave Boston a 6-3 win after the team had trailed for most of the...
When Big Papi (that's David Ortiz for those that don't follow baseball but are till reading this) smacked a three run homer to lift the Boston Red Sox over the Texas Rangers Thursday night it was just another of the many moments that have defined the career of the Boston legend.
But it was not just any 'Big Papi' moment. His teammates ripped off his jersey during...
John Lackey may not have gotten the win Wednesday night, but the right-hander impressed his teammates and coaches with yet another quality start.
In six innings of work, Lackey allowed just one run — a home run by former teammate Adrian Beltre — on five hits and zero walks. Starts like this have been the norm for the veteran for nearly a month, as he’s allowed just four total...

Boston Red Sox third baseman Will MiddlebrooksIs in Pawtucket on a rehab assignment and he may find that his stay in the minor leagues extends beyond a traditional rehab assignment. Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty ImagesIt was shaping to be a SquanderPalooza of epic proportions. Boston had left 10 men on base during multiple opportunities to plate a tying run. Then, in the seventh, the Carmine Hose pushed across a run with some hustle by Mike Napoli and a great take-out slide by David Ortiz. It was Ortiz who untied things for good in the ninth—clouting a three...
With their highest draft pick in over two decades, the Red Sox chose one of the most versatile players on the board, selecting left-handed pitcher/outfielder Trey Ball seventh overall Thursday night.
Ball has been called the best two-way player in this year’s draft class, boasting both a 91-94-mph fastball and considerable power with the bat.
As a senior at New Castle High School...
With the game tonight being postponed due to Tropical Storm Andrea ruining everything with rain, we now have some time to review the recent selections by Boston in this years' draft. No surprise the Sox went heavy on pitchers in the draft as most teams due since that is a position where players seem to fizzle out the quickest. Seven out of their...

After offense was easy to find last night, it disappeared again tonight. The Rangers bullpen was able to mostly shut down the Red Sox after Alexi Ogando went 5 2/3 innings, and all the Red Sox bullpen could do was try to keep Boston in the game.
Here are the four bases:
