Boston Red Sox
Even though Jacoby Ellsbury‘s hitting streak came to an end Friday night against the Athletics, the Red Sox still walked away victorious for the 58th time this season. The win column is the highest its ever been for Boston before the All-Star Break.
In the last leg of their West Coast fling, the Red Sox are one win away from matching the total number of series wins in 2012. Last season, Boston only put away 20 series wins over the course of the season. At the halfway point of the 2013 season, the Sox sit at 19.
The Red Sox send the same nine from Friday’s game to the plate, and Jon Lester gets the start on the mound. Lester is 8-5 on the year with a 4.60 ERA, and though the numbers are higher than Boston fans are used to seeing from the lefty, the offense has been there to back him up.
The AL West-leading A’s send A.J. Griffin to the mound Saturday night. Griffin has faced Boston before this series, and on April 22 he was chased from the game after just four innings. He gave up ei...

(Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)Brandon Workman made a big statement in his first big league start. The 24-year-old righty carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, giving up his bid for immortality and the lead on a two-run home run in that frame. The game droned on until the 11th when the A's walked-off with a 3-2 win—victimizing new Red Sox reliever Matt Thornton. Dustin Pedroia...
(Thearon Henderson/Getty Images)This time, Jon Lester was respectable. Six and one-third innings, three earned runs. The problem is we have bigger expectations of Lester—he's supposed to be our 1A or 1B ace. He's not even close. And, to his credit, he knows it. Said Lester after the 3-0 loss to the A's, "A loss is a loss, It doesn't matter how well you'...
The Boston Red Sox organization was represented by three prospects in the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday afternoon — Xander Bogaerts, Garin Cecchini and Anthony Ranaudo — and two of them had very strong outings.
Bogaerts started at shortstop for the World team, which lost 4-2. He went 2-for-3 with two singles, a walk and a run scored on a sacrifice fly. He is currently playing...
With the Red Sox thin in the bullpen and needing a Sunday starter it's interesting to note that Alfredo Aceves, who would seem a likely contender for a spot, was shipped off to the minors. Again.
Despite pitching well in three spot starts this season, Aceves has yet to stick with the team. His last call up lasted less than an inning.
Drake Britton screwed up royally during spring training. But to his credit, the 24-year-old has worked tirelessly this season, and he now has a chance to make an impression on the Red Sox.
Britton was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket before Sunday’s game in Oakland. It marks the first major league stint of Britton’s career, and it will be an opportunity for him to show that he...
The Red Sox just weathered another stretch where young replacements struggled on the big league stage, with Alex Wilson getting decimated in relief and Allen Webster slipping in his latest spot start.
But no matter — Boston has the best record in the American League (and almost the majors) heading into Friday’s game.
Something strange is happening with the team that calls Fenway...

Unless you've been living under a rock, then you'll know that David Ortiz just set a new record for most hits by a designated hitter Wednesday night against the Seattle Mariners. So, with that new record begs the question: Does Big Papi have a shot at the Hall of Fame? You could make a compelling argument...
Coming off a successful 4-2 road trip, the Athletics return to Oakland to face the Boston Red Sox, marking their second-straight series against a powerhouse team to wrap up the unofficial first half of the regular season.
The Boston Red Sox acquired left-handed reliever Matt Thorton from the Chicago White Sox late Friday night. Earlier this week Boston lost LHP Andrew Miller for the season and the team acted quickly to fill the void.
“You don’t go into July hoping to trade for a reliever,” Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said in a conference call Friday night. “But we are what we...
The two best teams in the American League meet by the Bay, as the Boston Red Sox (57-37) finish their West Coast road swing at the Oakland Athletics (54-38). The A’s lead the AL West by a game over the Texas Rangers. Boston has guaranteed that it will be in first place in the AL East through the All-Star Break with a 3.5-game lead over Tampa Bay...
It’s back to Triple-A for Steven Wright.
The Red Sox announced that Wright, who dazzled in relief on Thursday, was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room for the newly acquired Matt Thornton.
Wright pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen against the Mariners on Thursday, but the Red Sox acquired Thornton in a trade with the White Sox on Friday. Boston sent minor...
(AP Photo/Ben Margot) Yes, Jonny, that was the second straight game lost by the Sox. That was Jonny Gomes arguing with home plate Umpire, Todd Tichenor, that he did call time out in time (which he didn't), before he struck out in the 9th. Gomes was promptly ejected from the game not long after the argument began. It all started to downhill way before that...

New Red Sox reliever Matt Thornton
The Red Sox made a fairly important move tonight by acquiring White Sox left-handed relief pitcher Matt Thornton. Thornton is 0-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 40 appearances for the White Sox this season. He is a solid lefty arm that will be added to a severely depleted bullpen. After the injury to Andrew Miller and the ineffectiveness of Andrew Bailey...
