Jake Arrieta is one of the better pitchers on the Chicago Cubs, if not the best. The Cubs clearly lack dominant pitching as they have spent most of their time building up the hitting instead, that’s why recent reports of David Price and Jon Lester have surfaced. However, Arrieta (6’4″, 225 lbs.) made it clear to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times that he wants to stick around – and he thinks he can be the ace the Cubs are looking for.
‘‘I don’t think I’m a guy that’s going to ask for an astronomical amount of money,’’ Arrieta said Tuesday. ‘‘But I think if there’s a fair deal to be reached, I’m in 100 percent.”
‘‘I like pretty much everything about Chicago and the team that’s in place now, with the guys that are coming up. It’s hard not to want to stay here.’’
Arrieta has a 6-4 record this season with a 2.77 ERA, most consider him the Cubs’ “ace” since Jeff Samardzija was traded away to Oakland. He has a career record of 30-31 with a career ERA of 4.71.
Could the Cubs possibly afford Lester and Arrieta? Scott Boras could be a barrier when trying to negotiate Arrieta at an affordable price.
