Former second round draft pick by your White Sox and Indiana State product Jake Petricka has been called up to replace Ramon Troncoso, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list. As we wrote about recently, Petricka has been one of if not the main name to know regarding the inevitable bullpen openings in the team's near future. Since making the transition from starter to reliever over the offseason, he's been dominant. In 21 appearances for AA Birmingham, he posted a 2.06 ERA and struck out just over one hitter per inning. And since we has promoted to AAA Charlotte, he's only gotten better. There, in 10 games, he's got a 1.71 ERA to go along with a 1.043 WHIP, much better than his career 1.455 mark. Not to mention, he's struck out a solid 17 of 62 batters faced. So at 25 years old, it's Petricka's time to shine. He was certainly going to be called up on September 1st with the rest of the promotees, but with this slot opening up, team management may as well get an extra couple of weeks to look at him. If he looks alright, he'll most likely go into 2014 spring training with a pretty good chance of joining Addison Reed, Nate Jones, and possibly Daniel Webb as the right-handed building blocks of the bullpen. And considering how good he's been consistently since becoming a reliever, I really do have somewhat high hopes for the Terre Haute, IN native. Petricka throws a fastball that can reach the mid-90's as well as a very sharp breaking ball that I'm sure Don Cooper can't wait to get his hands on. Though he was drafted in by the Sox in 2010, they first tried to snag him in 2008, though he decided to go to Indiana State instead of turning pro. Some fans, like myself, thought Troncoso would help this ball club win some games down the stretch (before the tailspin, to be fair). But he's really just been a train wreck, as he put up a 5.25 ERA through 25 appearances in his effort to make an effective comeback in the league. We'll continue to monitor Petricka's performance and progress and what it means for the organization going forward.
