MVN:
There seems to be an air of confidence every time Roy Halladay steps on the mound. A quiet kind of confidence, but nonetheless, the kind of confidence that spreads across the field into every Blue Jay. When the Doc is pitching, the Jays know they have a chance of winning, however, last night, Halladay produced a very un-Halladay like game. He was an inning eater as usual going eight strong and striking out nine, but he gave up eight hits and five earned runs, including a couple of two-run homers. Halladay is now 3-1 with an ERA of 3.72.The Jays had their chances to win the game. With the game 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth, the Jays loaded the bases with one out. Rod Barajas, who has been struggling at the plate so far this season, hit a screamer to third, but unfortunately right into the glove of Michael Young. Travis Snider followed by popping the first pitch he faced to centre field. In the bottom of the ninth, Aaron Hill hit a one out double and was moved over to third by Rios on a ground ball. Vernon Wells stepped up as the last out of the game. He watched two beautiful fastballs go right down the middle for strikes before swinging at a third pitch that was up and in. Wells, the multi-millionaire showed both terrible plate vision and patience as he flied out to centre to end the game. The Jays and Rangers take the field tonight with David Purcey (0-1) matching up against Matt Harrison (0-2). If the Jays lose tonight, it will be the first series loss of the season, and might spell a period of uncertainty as they will look to Brian Tallet, Scott Richmond and Ricky Romero to right the ship.
