As if managing the day-to-day operations of a baseball club and facing questions about his (lack of) off-season activity aren’t stressful enough, Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos is growing self-conscious about his age as he approaches the big 3-5 this year. Okay, I don’t know that to be true whatsoever, but how else do you explain the sudden stockpiling of greybeards to fill holes in the roster? Each of Anthopoulos’ five most recent acquisitions (Darren Oliver, Nelson Figueroa, Chris Woodward, Omar Vizquel and, reportedly, Francisco Cordero) have been older than the GM. We’ve already discussed Oliver here and – let’s be honest – it’s hard to muster up any kind of reaction on Figueroa or Woodward, so we’ll focus our discussion on the most recent signees, the 44-year-old Vizquel and 36-year-old Cordero. When I finally stopped snickering about the thought of a 44-year-old manning the middle infield for Toronto and actually started making s...

Halos making pitch for reliever Francisco Cordero

The Angels are one of four finalists to acquire free-agent reliever Francisco Cordero, his agent said, but it is unclear whether they are recruiting the veteran right-hander as a closer or set-up man. Angels General Manager Jerry Dipoto has maintained all winter that he is not looking to replace closer Jordan Walden, who as a rookie last season went 5-5 with a 2.98 earned-run average...

Blue Jays agree to terms with RHP Cordero

The Toronto Blue Jays agreed to terms with closer Francisco Cordero on a one-year deal worth $4.5 million on Tuesday. Cordero became a free agent after the Cincinnati Reds decided to pay his $1 million buyout. The righthander posted a 5-3 mark with a 2.45 ERA and converted 37 of 43 save opportunities last season, including 20 of 21 after the All-Star break. The 36-year-old Cordero...

Just Say No to Francisco Cordero (And Brad Lidge, too)

Francisco Cordero. (MLB)It’s not that I don’t like the two relief pitchers. Brad Lidge will always have a place in my heart. He’ll go down as one of the best relievers in Phillies history, not to mention the most famous for his pose after throwing that beautiful slider to Carlos Ruiz in the 2008 World Series. We’ll always have those memories.Francisco Cordero...

Blue Jays (Once Again) Complete New-Look Bullpen With Francisco Cordero Signing

…and here I was, thinking that Alex Anthopoulos was done revamping the Blue Jays bullpen, after the team added Darren Oliver and Jason Frasor to the mix. It looks as though the Blue Jays GM has changed gears after it became clear that the price to pay for quality starters (ie. Gio, Latos) was out of the team’s range; if you can’t go for a front-line starter, why...

Why I will miss CoCo.

Wow, the market really collapsed for Francisco Cordero. It appears he is going to the Blue Jays…as a setup man. I know I’m probably in the minority, but I’m a fully-paid member of the CoCo Fan Club. Sure, he had his occasional problems, and he frustrated me just as much as he did you guys. In the end, however, he was what you would call a “stand-up guy.”...

Blue Jays Shore Up Bullpen With Cordero Signing

On the heels of giving starter Brandon Morrow an extension, the Blue Jays struck again, signing free agent reliever Francisco Cordero to a one year, $4.5 million contract. After spending the last eight years closing for the Rangers, Brewers and Red, Cordero will be heading to a set-up role for newly acquired Toronto closer Sergio Santos. After some fantastic years in his prime (six...
