Don’t think anyone saw this one coming. After a very productive tenure with the Phillies during which he posted a .282/.380/.506 line with 95 home runs, Jayson Werth has agreed to a 7-year, $126M contract with the Washington Nationals. At 7 years and $126M, the Nationals probably overpaid a bit — Werth is 32-years old and the deal will only hurt in a few years — but, given their losing history, they probably felt the need to open up their checkbook.
I thought the Red Sox would ultimately pursue Werth — he fits their team m.o. — especially after they failed to reach an extension agreement with Adrian Gonzalez during their allotted window (as a result, that trade may not even happen anymore). It’ll be interesting to see how much Carl Crawford will demand given Werth’s mammoth deal.
