Today is the birthday of longtime MLB 1B and AL DH Jim Thome. He turns 43 and is likely not returning to baseball after last appearing for the Baltimore Orioles in 2012. Thome ranks as one of the quietest run producers in the history of MLB. Some of it has to do with his career being during the height of the steroids era. Two arguments can be made considering Thome’s career. One would include the assumption he used because he played when he did. Another would give him the benefit of the doubt because he was never implicated. Before I handle each side of this discussion, lets look at Thome’s career numbers. Thome played 22 seasons in the big leagues, from 1991-2012. He played for the Cleveland Indians from 1991-2002, 2011, the Philadelphia Phillies from 2003-2005, 2012, the Chicago White Sox from 2006-2009, the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2009, the Minnesota Twins in 2010 and 2011 and the Baltimore Orioles in 2012. He played in the postseason for the Indians in 1995-1999, 2001, the ...

Who will the Orioles call up for September?

Six days from now the Orioles can expand their roster to 40. They may not use the 15 available roster spots as they nearly did last season but they’re likely to use more than a handful. With Norfolk still in a playoff race the Orioles don’t want to plunder the Tides but they’ll probably summon at least a few by Sunday. When Norfolk’s season ends they’ll bring up a few...

Baltimore Orioles: A Decade Of Hits And Misses In The 1st Round

When you consistently have a top 5 pick in the MLB draft, finding talent is rather easy. The Baltimore Orioles have had mixed results with their past ten first round draft picks, but a stretch of six straight top 5 picks produced several quality players. The years of futility for the Orioles look to be finally paying off, as they have some of the best young talent in the majors...

O's recall RHP prospect Gausman; option Chen

The Baltimore Orioles have promoted touted prospect Kevin Gausman from Triple-A Norfolk before their game against Boston and optioned left-hander Wei-Yin Chen to their Gulf Coast League affiliate. Manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday ''service time'' allowed the club to send Chen to their Gulf Coast League club in Sarasota, Fla. Chen will be recalled to make his...

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jason Hammel successfully completed a bullpen session over the weekend, and manager Buck Showalter told reporters -- including Jeff Seidel of MLB.com -- that the starting pitcher is now slated to make a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday with the team's Double-A affiliate. Davis wants Miggy to win Crown?

Chris Davis is Miguel Cabrera's biggest obstacle blocking him from winning the Triple Crown, but he wants the Tigers slugger to win it.

Davis stands in way of Cabrera's Triple Crown bid

Only Chris Davis stands between Miguel Cabrera and baseball history. As he heads toward the conclusion of another sensational season with the Detroit Tigers, Cabrera has a decent shot at becoming the first major league player to win the Triple Crown in successive seasons. Entering play Monday, Cabrera comfortably led the AL with a .356 batting average, 28 points higher than runner...

Victorino's 2 HRs power Boston past Orioles 13-2

The Baltimore Orioles felt fortunate to fall only one game further behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East standings. The Orioles managed just four hits and struck out eight times in a 13-2 rout against the first-place Red Sox on Tuesday night. Baltimore dropped 6 1-2 games behind Boston in the division race. ''You've got a team playing well over there. That's...

Stephen Drew Starts at Shortstop Against Left-Hander Wei-Yin Chen in Series Opener With Orioles

The Red Sox will return home Tuesday night to face the Baltimore Orioles, and with the O’s going with a left-hander to open the series, it seemed to make sense to start Xander Bogaerts at shortstop to make his home debut. However, it will be Stephen Drew in the lineup to begin the three-game series, which also opens a nine-game homestand. The left-handed-hitting Drew will get the...

Time for the Oriole Stomp

This post is gonna be quick. And it’s gonna be to the point. Fact is it seems like the Orioles have had our number for so long, I almost can’t remember a time when Buck Showalter wasn’t grinning and rubbing his hands in the opposing team’s dugout, nodding in approval as his team dropkicks ours out of the standings. No more, I say. I want all three of these games. I want...

Two Explosive Offenses Meet When Red Sox Take On Orioles, Fight to Stay Atop AL East (Video)

There’s no place like home — that’s certainly how the Red Sox should feel as they start a nine-game homestand after playing 16 games on the road. They kick it off Monday night with a three-game set against the Orioles, who certainly shouldn’t be underestimated.  O’s Slugger Chris Davis leads the league in home runs, and is a force to be reckoned with on offense.
