Jerry Girardi, the father of New York Yankees manager Joe, passed away at the age of 81.

Jerry had been battling Alzheimer's disease. It was reported that he passed away on Saturday but the younger Girardi kept it secret until today.

Joe Girardi does plan on managing in tonight's Game 4 of the ALDS against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium, according to Joel Sherman of The New York Post. The Yankees hold a 2-1 lead in best-of-five series.

Joe Girardi, the fourth of five children, credits his father for introducing him to the sport of baseball. Joe gave his first World Series ring to his dad.

"I feel sorry for him. I know it's tough," Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano said.

"Even if he was sick for a long time, it's still hard," said Cano. "We want to win for him tonight. I know he's a family guy. You always see his kids and his wife. He always says 'family first' so I know this is tough for him."

According to reports, funeral services have not been set, but will be held in Girardi's home town of East Peoria, Ill..
