BOSTON — Wouldn’t it be fitting if the Red Sox met Terry Francona‘s Cleveland Indians in the ALDS? Red Sox manager John Farrell reiterated Wednesday that his club is trying to take care of its own business, but he also admitted that a potential matchup with his long-time buddy has crossed his mind. “Yeah, there’d be a lot of stories to all of it if that’s the way it works out,” Farrell said before Wednesday’s game against the Orioles. “Because we’re in it, because we’re fans of the game, yeah, we pay attention. But hell, we’ve got stuff to take care of ourselves.” The Red Sox failed to clinch a playoff spot Wednesday, but they could punch their ticket to the postseason as soon as Thursday and clinch the AL East crown as soon as Friday. There’s a good chance that Boston, which currently owns the best record in baseball, could then lock up home-field advantage throughout the postseason, and a first-round matchup with Cleveland is a realistic possibility. WFNY Stats & Info: Ubaldo Jimenez emerging as Indians ace

Yet again, I can’t help but share how amazing Ubaldo Jimenez has been for the Indians over a nearly five-month span. First, in early June, I wrote about some of his best starts in a Cleveland uniform. Then, again in a stats headline, I wrote about his incredible continued improvement here in early September. Man, did Jimenez remain hot again last night against the Houston Astros...

Justin Masterson Injury Update: Indians Ace Eyeing Return for Pennant Push

With just a few games remaining in the American League Wild Card hunt, the Cleveland Indians are hoping to get a boost to their pitching staff with Justin Masterson potentially set to throw a bullpen session this Friday. Masterson, who has been battling a strained oblique since September 2nd, could be available either out of the bullpen or in the rotation before the end of...

Shane Victorino Sits With Jammed Thumb As Red Sox Try Again to Wrap Up Playoff Bid

All right, let’s try this again. The Red Sox will have another chance to punch their ticket to the postseason Thursday night as they wrap up a three-game series with Baltimore. Because the Indians lost to Kansas City on Tuesday, the Sox now need just one win to clinch a playoff spot. With a pair of their usual starters — Jacoby Ellsbury and Shane Victorino –nursing injuries...

Shane Victorino Returns to Lineup, Starts in Center As Red Sox Look to Lock Up Playoff Bid

With a win Tuesday night, the Red Sox can officially call themselves playoff bound. Boston’s magic number to clinch the American League East sit at four, but a victory in Tuesday’s series opener against Baltimore — the Orioles’ final set at Fenway this season — will guarantee the Red Sox a wild-card bid, at the very least. After sitting out on Sunday, when the Sox wrapped...

Bourn, Indians rally for big 5-3 win in Kansas City

Kansas City, MO – The Cleveland Indians crafted some late-inning bat magic as they rallied a comeback 5-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. The Royals struck first as they scored one immediately off of Indians’ starter Corey Kluber (9-5, 3.55). Second baseman Emilio Bonifacio drew a one-out walk and scored as first baseman Eric Hosmer followed with a double...

Game 152: Orioles at Red Sox - Dempster duels with O's seeking to lower Magic Number

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer Only 11 games remain between the Boston Red Sox and the 2013 MLB Postseason. Six of those games will be against the Baltimore Orioles, beginning with a three-game series tonight at Fenway Park. The Orioles are still in the Wild Card hunt, but need some help down the stretch. With a win tonight, the Red Sox would officially eliminate the Orioles...

Sayonara: Koji's streak ends

The Guru Contributing Writer It had to come to an end eventually. After 37 straight batters up and 37 straight batters down, Koji Uehara's streak of perfection is over. Oh, and the Red Sox loss. Playoff celebrations will have to wait. “I’m not disappointed that the streak ended,” Uehara said through an interpreter. “Of course, I’m disappointed that we lost. But...

9/19 Recap: Astros 1 - Indians 2

Player of the Game There can't have be any complaints about the Indians new ace, Ubaldo Jimenez over the past month and tonight was no different. In seven innings he kept the Astros to just a single run, while striking out nine (giving him 27 in his last three starts). He only allowed six hits and walked none, showing his control. His walk numbers have been especially impressive...

RSL Poll: Who Starts Game 1?

The Guru Contributing Writer We don't think we're making a prediction of Carnac proportions here when we say the Red Sox are going to the playoffs. One year removed from a 69 win disaster, the Sox are in position to win 100 games and the magic number to win the American League East is just four games. With that being said, join The Guru in his hot tub time machine as...

Jim Monaghan Contributing writer Chris Davis singled home two runs in the top of the twelfth inning to lift the Orioles past the Red Sox 5-3 at Fenway Park. The loss was the second in a row for the Red Sox who still saw their magic number to make the playoffs drop to one thanks to the Royals beating Cleveland. A win against the Orioles in the series finale Thursday night would...

Orioles pull it out in Boston

The playoff push for the Orioles continued last night in Boston and they kept pace in the wild card hunt with a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox last night. As we all know, the Birds are fighting to play in October and despite only being about a .500 team since the All-Star break, they are still in thick of things. They broke a 2-2 tie in the ninth inning, thanks to a Danny Valencia...

Who'll take fall if Texas tanks again?

Two years ago, the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves reacted quite differently to their respective second-half collapses. The Red Sox conducted an exorcism, running off both manager Terry Francona and general manager Theo Epstein. The Braves, on the other hand, fired only hitting coach Larry Parrish. Which brings us to the Texas Rangers, who have melted down for the second straight...

Indians fall to Royals 7-1 to open critical series

Rather than bemoan a slew of strikeouts, Indians manager Terry Francona preferred to simply praise Royals ace James Shields for the way he sliced up his lineup Monday night. Shields kept the Indians off balance for six innings, Salvador Perez led a scrappy Kansas City offense and the result was a 7-1 victory over Cleveland in the opener of a three-game series with significant playoff...
