Alfredo Aceves' 2012 season began and ended miserably. With some controversial moments thrown in the middle, it's fair to wonder what his future holds. It'd be easy to say the Red Sox should part ways with Aceves before taking the field in 2013, but the righty has at times proven he has good stuff. Red Sox manager John Farrell said during an interview with WEEI on Thursday that he isn't ready to make any drastic decision with Aceves, regardless of how last season went. Instead, the new skipper wants to see for himself what exactly is going on. "I definitely plan on speaking with him," Farrell said of Aceves. "I would like to get a little more understanding of the history over the last two years. I can tell you from across the field this is a very, very good pitcher. He's got some abilities about him, particularly resilience and how often he can pitch and to the extent he can pitch. Those are the things you just don't find.&qu...

John Farrell Given Freedom as He Builds Staff, Says He'll Consider Current Red Sox Coaches

BOSTON -- John Farrell wants to bring stability to the Red Sox, and that starts with the coaching staff. While Farrell has reportedly brought Torey Lovullo from Toronto to become his bench coach, he said he's still discussing the rest of the team's coaching vacancies with Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington. "I wouldn't say we're really...

The team made the announcement on Friday, six days after Farrell was named manager after the Red Sox went 69-93 in their only season under Bobby Valentine, who was fired the day after it ended. Lovullo, 47 was Toronto's first base coach the past two seasons when Farrell managed the Blue...

Torey Lovullo Named Red Sox Bench Coach

John Farrell has named his right-hand man. On Friday, executive vice president/general manager Ben Cherington and Farrell announced that Torey Lovullo has been named the team's bench coach. Lovullo, who served as first base coach on Farrell’s staff in Toronto for the 2011-12 seasons, returns for his second stint in the Red Sox organization after managing...

Give Farrell a Chance

John Farrell is here, and already the negative talk has begun. Pitching coaches make bad managers. He was part of the problem in the Sox decline after 07. His record in Toronto was 154-170. This is a big moment in Red Sox history. Their image right now is that of a laughingstock- three managers in three years, players and coaches undermining Tito and Bobby V, owners' meetings...

Red Sox Name Torey Lovullo Bench Coach

Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington and new skipper John Farrell have completed their first act together in compiling a field staff for Farrell. Today, they named Toronto Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo as Farrell's bench coach. Luvullo was the manager for the Pawtucket Red Sox in 2010. I had told Steve when Farrell was hired that I thought Lovullo...

Torey Lovullo tapped as bench coach

In the least surprising move since John Farrell was named manager, Torey Lovullo has joined the Red Sox as bench coach, according to a joint announcement from Ben Cherington and John Farrell.  Lovullo of course was Farrell's first-base coach in Toronto, and before that was the Pawtucket manager, so he has long ties to this organization. But did you know that he has a 1.167...

Red Sox Expected to Employ 'Aggressive Style' From Base Running to Pitching

BOSTON –– John Farrell isn't afraid of the tough conversations. As manager of the Blue Jays, he was willing to challenge legendary shortstop Omar Vizquel's assessment of his managerial style. Farrell hopes that aggressive personality will continue to translate onto the field. "I do know this -- an aggressive style is what we want, and that takes...

Terry Francona 'Pumped Up' That John Farrell Is Following in His Footsteps in Boston

BOSTON -- Terry Francona may be in Cleveland, but he's still keeping his tabs on the state of the Red Sox. When John Farrell accepted the job to become the franchise's 46th manager history in history last Saturday, he called Francona -- he served as Francona's pitching coach with the Red Sox from 2007 to 2010 -- to share the news. Turns out, the Indians skipper is...

Andrew Bailey Will Be Red Sox' Closer in 2013 If Healthy, According to John Farrell

While it's not exactly earth-shattering news, Andrew Bailey will likely be the Red Sox' closer in 2013. John Farrell revealed such during a WEEI interview on Thursday. Bailey, of course, was expected to be Boston's closer after coming over from Oakland, but injuries sidelined him for a good portion of the 2012 season. The 28-year-old was then eased back...

5 ‘Sexier’ Choices for Boston Red Sox Manager

A.B. When the Boston Red Sox hired John Farrell to be their 46th manager in the history of the franchise this week, I wasn’t thrilled. After all, it wasn’t going to take too much managerial talent to replace Bobby V. And while Farrell may be the safe choice to man the dugout, I’m sure there are still a lot of Sox fans out there who aren’t overly excited. If the Fenway...

Report: John Farrell Compensation Talks Came Down to Andrew Bailey or Mike Aviles

The Red Sox sent Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays in exchange for John Farrell, but it appears that they discussed sending a key piece of their bullpen up north as well. Compensation talks between the two teams for Farrell's services came down to either Aviles or Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey, according to ESPN's Buster Olney, although it's unclear how the two clubs ultimately...
