"They're both perfectly fine and pitching great," you might have said. Well, I would have said the same thing, but I couldn't forsee Clay Bucholz's imjury problems and Jon Lester's struggles. Now let's take this a step farther - if anyone told me that John Lackey and Ryan Dempster would have been our two best starters, I probably would have laughed. I was as disappointed as anyone after he struggled in his first 2 seasons, then was benched for a year due to injury. He was inconsistent in his first 2 years as a Red Sox player, but whatever he did to rehab from his injries a year a go clearly did wonders for him. He now looks more like the Lackey we paid big bucks for. Yesterday, he became the first Red Sox pitcher to strikeout 12 hitters without a walk since one...

Lackey Is Earning His Paycheck

Being the Yankees fan that I am, I take great joy when the Red Sox make a bad move, e.g. J.D. Drew. So when the 2009-2010 off-season came around and they signed John Lackey, I had a good chuckle. After Lackey’s stellar 2007 season he regressed in 2008 and 2009. His ERA rose in each of those years and injuries set in limiting him to under 200 innings for the first time in his career...

John Lackey ties career high with 12 K’s in win over Rockies

credit: Jim Rogash/Getty Images John Lackey turned in another quality outing on Wednesday by tossing seven innings of two run ball against Colorado. Lackey tied a career high with 12 strikeouts while walking none. It was the seventh quality start for Lackey in his last eight outings as he lowered his ERA to 2.99 and his WHIP to 1.20 on the season. The 12 strikeouts matched Lackey’s...

Lackey dominant, Sox handle Rockies 5-2

In a somewhat unusual 4:00pm start at Fenway, the Red Sox cruised to a victory on the shoulders of John Lackey. Lackey, who has shown flashes of being an ace so far this year, was masterful versus the Rockies. He tied a career high with 12 strikeouts over seven innings on 98 pitches, while allowing eight hits and only two earned runs. Lackey went out for the eighth inning, but allowed...

Your Morning Dump...where John Lackey is carrying the rotation

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. The Red Sox are in desperate need of a veteran starter to step forward at mid-season.     Who knew that would be John Lackey?     Lackey gave the Red Sox seven strong innings Wednesday, allowing just...

Quality Control: Mr. Dependable, Ryan Dempster

Jan-Christian Sorensen Contributing Writer It’s been a feast-or-famine situation when Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster is looking for run support from his teammates this season. Last night, it was a feast of epic proportions. The Sox ripped a season-high 20 hits and scored 11 runs against the visiting Colorado Rockies to lift Dempster (5-8) to the win. Dempster, for his part,...

Boston Red Sox behind strong pitching and timely hitting sweep Colorado Rockies

The Boston Red Sox rebounded nicely after the tough weekend series in Detroit as they returned home and swept the Colorado Rockies in a brief two game series. Both games saw the Red Sox get quality starting pitching from Ryan Dempster on Tuesday night and John Lackey on Wednesday afternoon. Dempster went six strong innings allowing just two runs and striking out four Rockies to...

John Lackey Has ‘Less Worries,’ Finally Able to Execute Pitches Without Injury (Video)

2013 has been a renaissance for John Lackey. After pitching up to ace-like standards for years with the Angels, after coming over to Boston the big right-hander just wasn’t quite the same. Earning the ire of Red Sox Nation, Lackey struggled through two seasons before the reason for his ineffectiveness was revealed, and subsequently Lackey missed a whole year rehabbing from Tommy...

John Lackey Stepping Up Huge for Red Sox, Serving as Very Reliable Starter at Perfect Time

BOSTON — John Lackey has become more than just a pleasant surprise. He is the Red Sox’ most reliable starter right now. Let that sink in for a minute. Lackey — the same pitcher who was on the verge of being run out of town after two subpar seasons and a year on the shelf — has morphed into a model of consistency at a time when the Red Sox absolutely need it. Jon Lester is...

Red Sox Have 'Won', 'Lack' A Dozen Of Another

(Jim Rogash/Getty Images)John Lackey struck out a season-high 12 batters, and his teammates kept their hitting shoes on, as Boston defeated the Rockies again—this time, 5-3. In perhaps his best outing of the year, Lackey went a strong seven innings, giving up just two runs on eight hits. Brand spanking new closer Koji Uehara pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to cement the 47th victory of the...

'Rocky Mountain Fry'; Sox Pound Colorado, 11-4

(Jim Rogash/Getty Images)Ryan Dempster must be wondering why the Red Sox can't support him like this all the time. Boston pounded out a season-high twenty hits on the way to smiting the Rockies at Fenway, 11-4. Four different Red Sox players collected three hits (Dustin Pedroia, Daniel Nava, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jose Iglesias), while Pedroia knocked in four runs in the rout. Dempster...

Shane Victorino had three hits and Dustin Pedroia added two for the Red Sox. Colorado's Michael Cuddyer extended his hitting streak to 23 games with two solo...

Game 80: Rockies at Red Sox - The mountains turn blue!

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer That was the start the Boston Red Sox (46-33) needed to kick-off their nine-game home-stand. The Sox pounded out 20 hits en route to an 11-4 win over the Colorado Rockies (39-39). The finale of this short two-game series pits Boston’s John Lackey against the Rockies’ Roy Oswalt. Lackey is 4-5 this season, but boasts a 3.03 ERA. The Sox will...

3 Stars of the Game: Game 79

Ryan MacLeod Contributing Writer It surprised me to look at the Red Sox record against the National League this season and see that the Rockies are only the second team from the NL that we have played. We currently have a record of 3-2 against the NL this year and last night was an exciting win for the Sox. They belted out 20 hits and plated 11 runs. Starting pitcher Ryan Dempster...

Red Sox 11, Rockies 4

Dustin Pedroia drove in four runs and had three of Boston's season-high 20 hits, and Ryan Dempster took advantage of an early cushion that kept getting bigger for the Red Sox in their 11-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Mike Napoli added two RBIs and Jacoby Ellsbury, Daniel Nava and Jose Iglesias joined Pedroia with three hits apiece as the Red Sox gave...

3 Stars of the Game: Game 80

Ryan MacLeod Contributing Writer The Red Sox made quick work of their series with Colorado, finishing the 2 game series with a win, scoring early and then scoring again in the 3rd inning. The Sox won both games of their 2 game series and now look forward to a series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Here are the 3 stars of last nights game: Star 3: David Ortiz Ortiz has be the major...
