Sometimes, it doesn’t pay to get out of the bed in the morning. But if a major league baseball player chooses to get up on one of those days, he’d be best advised to tell the manager to not put him in the lineup and instead remain in the safe confines of the dugout. Philadelphia Phillies outfielder John Mayberry Jr. probably was feeling that he was better off staying at home as he watched St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig’s fly ball to right-center roll by him after he slipped while trying to make the catch.
With one on and no outs and the score tied at 0-0 in the fourth inning, Mayberry drifted from his right field spot to settle under Craig’s fly ball. Just as he was about to make the grab, the turf must have come up and grabbed one of his ankles, because for seemingly no reason, he slipped and fell and the ball bounced by him.
That left runners on second and third, both of whom scored on Yadier Molina’s double, providing the Cardinals with critical runs in a 4-3 win.Via Eye on Baseball:
Derp, indeed. Between this play and Ben Revere’s awkward attempt at a catch on Wednesday (although Revere deserves much credit for his amazing catch on Monday), it’s been quite the adventure for Phillies outfielders this week.
