Two years ago, John Mayberry, Jr. got the call up to the major leagues. He showed an incredible amount of raw home run potential but also looked vastly overmatched. He played sparingly in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, but broke out as a fourth outfielder and platoon player in 2011. Mayberry posted a .273/.341/.513 statline with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs in 296 plate appearances. His .854 OPS ranked second-best on the team, behind only Hunter Pence, and ahead of players like Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino, and Chase Utley. Mayberry is under team control through the 2016 season. He still hasn’t shown he can play regularly enough but he is a very good hitter when platooned. Mayberry hit .306/.358/.593 against lefties in 2011 and .250/.330/.455 against righties, posting an OPS 168 points higher against lefties. He all but worked his way into a platoon with Raul Ibanez by the time the postseason rolled around, although Charlie Manuel’s loyalty to his veteran players wouldn’t allow him to admit...
