The Arizona Diamondbacks made another roster tweak Monday when they designated Lyle Overbay for assignment to make room for new third baseman Chris Johnson. The move left the D-backs with one true first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt, and five infielders who play primarily shortstop or third base as the non-waiver trading deadline approaches.

Johnson, obtained from Houston on Sunday, is likely to receive the bulk of the playing time at third going forward, manager Kirk Gibson said, and Johnson made a strong first impression when he hit a grand slam in the fifth inning of the D-backs' 7-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. Corner infielder Ryan Wheeler will serve as Goldschmidt's backup at first.

Though shortstop Stephen Drew has drawn interest from possible trade partners, D-backs general manager Kevin Towers said he could move forward with the roster as it stands. The D-backs are interested in adding pitching, will not trade prospects for a two-month rental player, and have had no calls on Justin Upton in at least the last two days.

"I'm comfortable with the guys we have," Towers said. "It's going to be probably tough to get all the ABs we want for all of our guys now that we have Chris Johnson in the mix. But if we feel we can improve it in other ways, we're going to look at it. If that means moving one of our position players for pitching, we'll look at it."

Drew and manager Kirk Gibson held a closed-door meeting in Gibson's office 2 1/2 hours before the D-backs met the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first of a three-game series Monday that opened a 10-game road trip.

"It wasn't some trade kind stuff," Drew told reporters.

Drew, Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald are primarily shortstops, and Bloomquist is hitting .299 with 20 doubles and 20 RBI.

The Drew market could extend into August, when teams must have waivers to make a deal, Towers said last week, as teams further evaluate their needs while monitoring Drew's health after his 11 1/2-month absence.
