Found December 10, 2011 on Mets Merized Online: Yardbarker Blogger Network
It’s no secret the Mets have been penny pinching this offseason. Between the slew of minimal contracts we’ve offered and the lack of any offer to Jose Reyes, it is evident that Sandy Alderson and the front office are examining the bargain bin rather than the premium shelf to construct this team for 2012. Despite this, the team is still in dire need of multiple positions – mainly concerning depth – and has little money to spend on them. One position that many believe the Mets should look into is another starting pitcher. Currently the Mets will plan to send out some combination of Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, R.A. Dickey, Jon Niese and Dillon Gee. With the health question marks and general ineptitude of some of the members of the staff, it would be wise to add another name to the mix. One such name that could hit the Mets radar is Jon Garland. Coming off a right-shoulder injury that required arthroscopic surgery, Garland will likely come cheap on a one-year deal that will allow him t...

Daniel Murphy, the Dodgers and family ties

Yesterday we learned that the Dodgers wanted to acquire Daniel Murphy from the Mets during the Winter Meetings but the trade never materialized because the Dodgers’ trading partner “satisfied its need elsewhere.” The Mets acquired a defensive-first outfielder and three relief pitchers during the Winter Meetings. So, who were the Dodgers offering for Murphy? Tony Gwynn...

Mets Lay Groundwork For Potential Trades, Parnell On The Move?

With the moves the Mets made at the Winter Meetings they definitely improved their club.  The bullpen that was such as disaster after K-rod was traded is now a strength. Now the focus of Sandy’s attention will turn to looking to bolster the teams starting staff and lineup through trades. The Winter Meetings are a rumor mill behemoth.  Everyone on the entire Mets roster...

Meet The Newest Met, Andres Torres

Here’s a pretty cool video of the player who will be patrolling centerfield for the Mets in 2012, Andres Torres. I believe fans are going to love this guy. Nobody will mistake Torres for Carlos Beltran, but defensively he will get the job done better than most, and if he returns to his 2010 levels offensively, that Pagan trade looks like grand larceny.

Wright Weighs In On Reyes

David Wright has issued the following statement regarding Jose Reyes: “Jose’s a great friend and a great player. While I will miss him as a friend and teammate, I’m glad he was able to get the contract that he earned and deserved. I truly wish him all the best in Miami. I have trust and faith that we will have a much improved and exciting team and 2012 will be a great year...

What the Loss of Jose Reyes Means for the Mets in 2012

For shortstop Jose Reyes, the 2011 season was the ninth season of his career with the New York Mets, and  Mets fans certainly knew the day was coming when Reyes became a free agent. The Mets have been bleeding cash for several years now, and even the move into their new facility at CitiField in time for the start of the 2009 season couldn’t stop the negative cash flow. Owners...

Murphy and Gonzalez further show multi-tasking approach

Photo by Michael BaronThe priority this off-season was to re-build the bullpen, Alderson didn't methodically sign or trade for one piece at a time. He checked in with the big names ( Lidge/K-Rod), took a look at the lesser options ( Qualls/Ayala) and looked in on the trade front. Once he had a feel for the market in a window of two hours he completely revamped the entire bullpen...

Mets face Paulino deadline

THIS IS WHAT we already know about Ronny Paulino: In his first season with the Mets, he irritated team brass with perceived lack of work ethic, preparation and offensive production. This is what we don’t yet know about Paulino: Whether the Mets will tender him a contract before Monday night’s deadline.

Mets made an offer to Alex Gonzalez

On Thursday, the Brewers agreed to terms on a one-year contract with SS Alex Gonzalez. Yesterday, Gonzalez told a Venezuelan sports-talk radio show he received offers from both the Giants and Mets, but decided to take the job with the Brewers so he could start. Michael Baron: In regards to an opportunity with the Mets, initially I could see why Gonzalez might think that. But I believe...

Source: Dodgers interested in Mets' Murphy

Daniel Murphy of the Mets is the player the Dodgers tried to trade for at the Winter Meetings, according to a baseball source, and they might make another run at him.

Looking Ahead to 2012

I have programmed up my simulator with the 2012 schedule and all of the updated trades and free agent signings (well at least the most significant ones). Still a little house keeping to do on updating my park factors and defensive ratings. Here is a preliminary look at how the simulator likes the 2012 Dodgers, including how it thinks the Dodgers will do on a month by month basis...

LA Dodgers first baseman James Loney was arrested after sideswiping several cars on the 101 Freeway before passing out behind the wheel of his Maserati in the fast lane, police said. The accident took place Nov. 14, but was only reported recently by local media. It occurred just west of the 405 Freeway in Sherman Oaks, according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Leland Tang...
