After Brad Penny's terrible start against the hated New York Yankees, it's time most of Red Sox Nation ask the question:Should Theo designate Penny for assignment?
There are good starters avalible, including Arizona's Jon Garland. Garland, 29, is 6-11 this season with a 4.42 ERA and a WHIP 1.44. Not spectacular, but not completely terrible. Garland cleared waivers, and is avalible for a claim.
I think the Red Sox claim of Billy Wagner may prevent them from placing a claim in for Garland. But most Red Sox fans think that Billy Wagner could be the next Eric Gagne. For those of you fair-weather fans, being like Eric Gagne isn't a good thing.
Anyway, comapre Penny's stats to Garland's this season. Penny has a better record at 7-8, but has a worse ERA and WHIP at 5.61 and 1.54, respectively. Oponents are hitting .299 against Penny compared to .275 against Garland.
