As some of you might know from my previous articles, I’m a Jordany Valdespin fan. The Mets’ intrasquad game and first Spring Training game against the Washington Nationals have only solidified my fandom.
Okay, okay. Maybe I wouldn’t necessarily have dinner with the guy, but are the Mets paying him to be a guy that you want to have dinner with? I don’t think so.
In the past two days, Valdespin has gone 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Not a bad way to start.
Yeah, maybe he’s incompetent when it comes to social media, but we should all cut the guy some slack. He’s only 25 after all. I’ve made more questionable decisions this weekend alone than he seems to have made in his entire career.
I know what you’re thinking, “But Dan, you’re not being paid millions of dollars to represent professional sports franchise.”
True. I’m not. Like I said though, are the Mets paying Valdespin to be an ambassador for the Mets? Not really. That’s why we have David Wright. The Mets pay

Mets Lose To Nats 6-4; Den Dekker Flashes Leather; Cowgill’s Got Game
Collin Cowgill is making gritty fashionable again for the Mets.
Lucas Duda did not start tonight’s 6-4 exhibition game loss against Washington, and won’t be in the lineup tomorrow. Look for him Wednesday or Thursday.
In his first two games, Duda went 0-for-7 with six strikeouts, and told reporters today, “we’re not going to hit the panic just yet.’’

Mets Reliever Pedro Feliciano will be shut down for two weeks
Mets LHP Pedro Feliciano will be shut down for at least two weeks from baseball activity while he wears a heart monitor to investigate what has been labeled a potentially serious heart condition, general manager Sandy Alderson said Sunday morning.
Alderson said it's still unclear whether Feliciano has a "hole" in his heart. The GM added that doctors are still seeking...
Pedro Feliciano Shut Down Indefinitely
Mets lefty reliever Pedro Feliciano is being shut down due to heart-related issues, according to Marc Carig of Newsday. Adam Rubin of ESPN says that there is a “small hole” near the outside of Feliciano’s heart, but it does not appear to be life threatening.
The southpaw does not believe the issue to be serious, but as a precaution he will be fitted for a heart monitor....
Wheeler, d’Arnaud, Syndergaard and Fulmer Make Baseball Prospectus’ Top 101 Prospects
Baseball Prospectus released its Top 101 Prospects this morning and four Mets prospects made the cut.
Three of them won’t surprise you as they’ve already appeared on more than a few top prospect lists this year. But what a nice surprise it was to see RHP Michael Fulmer ranked 98th and finally get some much deserved recognition.
Topping the list for the Mets of course was RHP Zack...
Lenny Dykstra gets shaggy behind bars
It looks like Lenny Dykstra is going for that old Brian Wilson look while he is behind bars. A mugshot of the gray-bearded Dykstra, once known as "Nails" for his all-out playing style, was obtained by TMZ and shows the former New York Mets centerfielder sporting a ZZ Top starter face. It bears little resemblance to the "Dude" of old. Dykstra, who was a key...
Slow Start Sends Duda To The Sidelines For A Few Days To Work On Swing
I expressed my concerns about Lucas Duda’s 0-7 start late last night, which you can read below. I was not surprised by what I predicted would be an avalanche of “it’s only two games” rebuttals. There they are for all of you to see.
It seems like many readers chose to ignore that it was Terry Collins who referred to Duda as a “work in progress” and that those were...
Mets News and Notes: Mets to Lose Money?, Upton/Bourn Notes, Duda, Gee, Niese, Syndergaard, Mets Fishing
Mets News and Notes:
Josh Kosman in the Post reports the Mets again will lose money this season. Writes Kosman:
The team is expecting to lose more than $10 million this year, after bleeding red the past two seasons, while attendance is projected to fall for a fifth straight year, The Post has learned.
The owners can expect to take about $65 million from separately owned...
Mets push back Johan Santana’s first spring start
The New York Mets have elected to push back Johan Santana’s
first start of spring training as a precautionary measure, according to Marc
Carig of Newsday.
Carig notes that New York is holding Santana back to allow
him to continue to build up his arm strength, not because they are concerned
with an injury. Carig says there is no structural damage that is cause for
concern...
Remembering Karl Ehrhardt, better known as Mets Sign Guy
Sometime this season, Mets fans can hope that a sign which reads “Oppo Taco” appears during a home game. That is Travis d’Arnaud’s personal phrase. In the 80s, we witnessed the “Ks” go up in the K Corner as Dwight Gooden struck out the competition.
Prior to any of this was Karl Ehrhardt, aka: the “Mets Sign Guy”. He first emerged during the 1964 season and became...
Mets rumors: New York ‘unlikely’ to sign Francisco Rodriguez
The New York Mets had been connected to former closer
Francisco Rodriguez earlier this winter. However, it remains “unlikely” that
the Mets sign Francisco, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.
Asked source if #Mets might again consider K-Rod, who remains free agent, and it was portrayed as unlikely--same as Jose Valverde previously
— Adam Rubin (@AdamRubinESPN...

Old Time Mets: And The Answer Is…..
I was going to start this post with “here’s a trivia question for you” but then I remembered Art Rust Jr., the long-time sports talk host on WABC-AM who got annoyed whenever someone would start off a call with that phrase. Rust would respond “it’s history, not trivia”. So, this is my question on an important piece of Mets’ history :
What pitcher won the most games for...
Matt den Dekker robs Anthony Rendon of a homer
Matt den Dekker of the New York Mets is working hard in an attempt to procure himself a spot on New York's Opening Day roster. He spent last year split between AA Binghamton and AAA Buffalo, and the 25-year old posted a .779 OPS with 17 homers between the two levels. In the seventh inning, Washington Nationals prospect Anthony Rendon hit a ball to deep center field and den Dekker...
A Quiet Storm
I gave up picking on Lucas Duda for lent. Henceforth, it's important to understand that Lucas Duda's four strikeout day against the worst team in baseball means nothing. He's working on a new stance which is quieter, and spring training is meaningless.
I don't know if I am writing this to convince you that this is meaningless, or to convince myself that this is...
Live Running Diary of the Nationals-Mets Game
Baseball! Baseballbaseballbaseball! Its back! Today brings us the first televised major league (sort of) baseball game of 2013 and I’m breaking out the critically-acclaimed live running diary to bring it to you Off The Bench style.
Today’s action features the Nationals and the Mets in a matchup of Grapefruit League titians. I just woke up from my post-8am baseball practice...
