The Detroit Sports Site:
The Detroit Tigers acquired Houston Astros closer Jose Veras on Monday, bolstering their bullpen just one day before the MLB trade deadline. The Tigers will send prospect Danry Vasquez and a player to be named later back to the Astros.
Veras had 19 saves in 22 chances for the Astros this season, while posting a 2.93 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. The 32-year-old reliever last pitched in the American League in 2009, with the Indians. Detroit will be his fourth team in three years — he was with Milwaukee in 2011, Pittsburgh in 2012 and now Houston in 2013.
He had served mainly as a setup man prior to joining the Astros. Veras chalked up 27 holds for Milwaukee during that 2011 season.
Statistically, the 32-year-old is enjoying his best year in the majors. His ERA and WHIP numbers are well below his career marks of 3.88 and 1.32, respectively. The Tigers plan to use Veras as a setup man, alongside Drew Smyly, leaving Joaquin Benoit in his spot as closer.
Veras’ contract does include a $3.5 million team option for 2014, so the Tigers could keep him around, especially if Benoit bolts in free agency.
Vasquez is a high-upside prospect — BlessYouBoys.com tabbed his as the Tigers’ No. 4 overall prospect back in February, writing, “Vasquez’s ceiling is that of an impact, middle of the order bat that hits over .300 consistently with 20+ HR power and tons of doubles, while playing a solid-average LF. Overall, he has the potential to be a perennial all-star, but it takes some dreaming to see it.”
The 19-year-old outfielder was carrying a .281 average with five homers, 16 doubles, 39 RBI and nine steals at Class-A West Michigan this season.

I don’t know much about him, but it seems like a no risk move. I don’t expect him to close, though I do think it’s reasonable to believe that he’ll be the setup guy.

It’s bullpen upgrade day. A few hours after the Tigers added Jose Veras, the Braves got the lefty reliever they’ve been hunting for, landing Scott Downs from the Angels, and they got him for what amounts to a hill of beans.
Working against Downs’ value was his age (37), his contract (remainder of $5M salary), and his splits (basically a LOOGY at this point). Adding a couple...
