Free agent Josh Hamilton, is looking for a seven-year, $175mm deal, John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus reports. If you are wondering, yes, that is a ton of money and years for someone who publicly struggles with alcohol addiction and staying healthy. The alcohol addiction part is an issue as some of the bigger market teams may be apprehensive to sign him to a big deal where the night life scene may tempt Hamilton and become a distraction. While in Texas, Hamilton missed an average of 32 games a season, which means you can count on him missing an entire month of the season. Setting aside all the negative and why Hamilton doesn't deserve that type of money, Hamilton is probably the biggest offensive threat on the market and is capable of putting up incredible numbers. In 2010, Hamilton won the AL MVP where he hit .359/.411/.663 with 32 home runs and 100 RBIs and an OPS of 1.044. Last offseason, Albert Pujols signed the largest contract of the winter as he signed a ten-year $254mm deal with the Angels. But Pujols signed that deal after playing in 147 games and hitting .285/.343/.516 with 30 home runs and 105 RBIs in 2011. Just another average Pujols season. Hamilton on the other hand is one year younger and played in 148 games while hitting .285/.354/.577 with 43 home runs and 128 RBIs. Similar numbers, but Hamilton did strikeout out almost three times as much as Pujols did in 2011. (162 Hamilton vs 61 Pujols). We know Texas has no interest in paying Hamilton that type of money, and they are hoping that other teams set the market for Hamilton. They did offer Hamilton a qualifying offer ($13.3mm) which Hamilton will not accept as he looks for a multi-year deal. No one thought the Angels would offer Pujols the type of money they did last offseason which should only give Hamilton hope as he looks to cash in big one last time.
