Iowa Cubs 4 @ Salt Lake Bees 5 I. Don't. Care. And neither do you. Mike Olt went 1-4, but every time he didn't single, he struck out. Logan Watkins also singled, as did a bunch of other people. What do you want from me? At least Jae-Hoon Ha doubled and homered; Edwin Mayonnaise and Luis Flores doubled too. The I-Cubs struck out 14 times and walked twice. Yoanner Negrin looked really, really good, earlier this year. I haven't watched him for a few months, and in those months he's apparently turned into a dumpster fire. 5 ER in 4.1 IP. Alberto Cabrera, Chang-Yong Lim, and Brian Schlitter each went scoreless to finish the game.  Birmingham Barons 9 @ Tennessee Smokies 6 (14 innings) Javier Baez went 1-6 with a walk, a SB, and no strikeouts. He scored 2 runs. Good! He had his 5th error. Bad! Arismendy Alcantara walked twice, doubled once, and singled once. Even better! Matt Szczur went 2-7. Rubi Silva went 0-7 with 3 SO. Brett Jackson was 2-6 with a walk, but he also struck out 3 times. Rafael Lopez walked once and singled thrice. The only notable pitching performance is Kevin Rhoderick's 7 walks in 1.2 innings. That was good for 4 runs, 3 earned, and the loss. Tennessee Smokies Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA Yeiper Castillo 3.2 4 3 0 1 2 0 3.47 P.J. Daytona Cubs 2 @ Fort Myers Miracle 5 Anthony Giansanti, sliding to 1st for this one, went 2-4 with a home run and a walk. Yaniel Cabezas also went 2-4. Everyone else was hot garbage. Zach Cates allowed 2 in 2, and Kyler Burke did one better and allowed 3 in 2. Dayan Diaz struck out 7 in 3 scoreless, hitless innings. Jeffrey Lorick also pitched a scoreless innings. Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2 @ Kane County Cougars 4 It's time to promote Albert Almora and Dan Vogelbach. Almora went 1-3 with a walk, and Vogelbach went 0-1 with 2 walks and a sacrifice fly. Almora was a 6.2% walk rate in Kane County against a 10.7% K rate. Jeimer Candelario doubled and walked, and Reggie Golden apparently hit a 700-ft HR. Oliver Zapata tripled and singled. As a team, the Cougars turned 3 double plays.  Justin Amlung pitched 3 scoreless frames. Nathan Dorris pitched 4 and allowed 2 runs, but struck out just 1 dude. Stephen Perakslis got the save with 2 scoreless innings. Spokane Indians 3 @ Boise Hawks 5 Kris Bryant went 2-4 with a single and a double. After a really, really bad start to his season, he's been quietly pretty solid. He could sniff KC at the end of the year; disappointing when I though he could end the season at Tennessee, but not the end of the world. Jacob Robers had 2 singles and a walk, and Cael Brockmeyer had double singles. Rony Rodriguez doubled.  Rob Zastryzny was nails again. He struck out two and allowed a hit in two innings. Sam Wilson took the bump next and allowed 2 unearned runs, but it was gross with a 3 WHIP. Zack Godley picked up the win with one earned run in 2 innings, and Scott Frazier allowed 2 hit and no runs/walks in 3 innings.  DSL Cubs 2 @ DSL Orioles2 3 VSL Cubs 9 @ VSL Tigers 5 AZL Angels 8 @ AZL Cubs 0 Nothing exciting, except Trevor Clifton pitched a scoreless inning with one hit and 2 strikeouts.    The post JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-30-13 appeared first on Obstructed View.

Way Too Early Look at 2014 Cubs

Well, the Cubs didn't trade anyone today. With DeJesus and Schierholtz in the fold for 2014 (though either could be traded in the offseason, I really doubt it), the Cubs 2014 roster (with no signings) looks like this: C: Welington Castillo 1B: Anthony Rizzo 2B: Darwin Barney SS: Starlin Castro 3B: Mike Olt LF: Junior Lake CF: David DeJesus RF: Nate Schierholtz 2B/CF:...

Wife of Chicago Cubs Outfielder Handles Trade Deadline Day With Bottles of Wine (Photo)

Baseball players who are likely to be dealt at the deadline battle a multitude of emotions about the life-changing move — but they aren’t the only ones affected by the trades. David DeJesus, an outfielder for the Chicago Cubs was a name that was floated around in trade rumors throughout the past couple of weeks, and although the Cubs found new homes for many of their starters...

Sveum: Samardzija deal 'not realistic'

Chicago Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija has shrugged off trade rumors and manager Dale Sveum said Sunday that any rumor about his right-hander being dealt is “silly.” Yet the Cubs listened to Arizona when the Diamondbacks asked their asking price for Samardzija and other teams have inquired as well. CBSSports.com’s Jon Heymnan wrote the only reason the Cubs “are looking around...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-31-13

Iowa Cubs 3 @ Salt Lake Bees 6 Mike Olt went 0-4. Jae-Hoon Ha went 2-3 with a walk. No one else played so don't even look. I seriously considered linking that score to a rick roll. Justin Grimm had a pretty forgettable 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 SO start. Casey Coleman was dicey in his scoreless frame, but then Marcus Hatley allowed 4 runs in 0.2 innings. Ick. Marcos Mateo, newly...

Cubs listened to offers for Jeff Samardzija

Although trade conversations really didn't go anywhere the Chicago Cubs did listen to offers for starter Jeff Samardzija before the non-wavier deadline expired Wednesday. In the real world of baseball business it is incumbent upon top executives to listen to offers on any and all of their players. In the sensitive world of long-term contracts and player control the issues can...

As a reminder, the Chicago Cubs will be giving away Lucha Libre masks to fans who attend tonight’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers and sit in the Budweiser Bleachers at Wrigley Field. CM Punk has signed two of the masks that will be given away. The Chicago Cubs mentioned the giveaway, writing on Twitter, “All fans in the Budweiser Bleachers tomorrow night get a #Cubs Lucha...

Cubs 6, Brewers 1

Edwin Jackson pitched eight solid innings, David DeJesus drove in three runs and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-1 on Wednesday night to salvage the finale of the four-game series. Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer and Starlin Castro belted a solo shot as Chicago closed out a 14-13 July, its first winning calendar month since it went 15-10 last July. Jackson allowed...

Former Red Sox GM Theo Epstein’s Brookline Mansion Up for Sale (Photos)

Theo Epstein left the Boston Red Sox about two years ago, but he didn’t leave Boston for good. During the MLB offseason, he and his family would retreat to their Chestnut Hill, Mass., home and take in the sights of the city Epstein once helped bring the Commissioner’s Trophy to. Now, it seems as if Epstein is ready to sever all ties. The Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations...

Happy Trade Deadline Day

TheJedi have already knocked out a number of trades that today shouldn't bring too much excitement, but there's still a few pieces left on the trading block. The most likely is Nate Schierholtz whom Jayson Stark reiterates is the most likely Cub to be dealt today. The Pirates and Rangers seem like the most likely spots at the moment. Heyman says Jeff Samardzija won't...

A snapshot of how depressing the Cubs are

Sitrick had a nice tweet about how Starlin Castro (I first typed Stalin Castro and really thought about keeping it) leads the team among qualified Cubes in batting average. I wanted to see how that stacked up this year, and found that Castro is 29th among team-leaders. Adeiny Hechavarria is 30th and the only Marlin with enough PA to qualify. Name Team G PA AVG Miguel Cabrera...

Trade Values: David DeJesus

This morning Ken Rosenthal said that the Cubs were shopping David DeJesus and Nate Schierholtz. I did a trade value on Schierholtz a few weeks ago, noting that it would probably take a Grade B hitting prospect to land him. Let’s take a look at the value of DeJesus, which will provide a better opportunity to compare both players. NOTE: The purpose here isn’t to suggest the Pirates...
