JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 6-24-13

Iowa Cubs 6 @ Memphis Redbirds 1 I'm just tired of writing about the Iowa Cubs. They don't have anyone on their team (they promoted Jae-Hoon Ha but he didn't play. Junior Lake walked once and struck out once. Logan Watkins went 1-5 with an RBI. Brooks Raley went 7 shutout innings. No one cares about the rest. Jackson Generals 1 @ Tennessee Smokies 5  Half of the hits...

Carlos Marmol (Photo Credit: Jerry Lai, US Presswire). After celebrating a Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup victory last night, some Chicago sports fans received even more pleasant news today. The Cubs designated reliever Carlos Marmol for assignment Tuesday, meaning the club has 10 days to trade or release him. That’s right Cubs fans, breathe a sigh of relief. Carlos Marmol’s...

Report: Ex-Cub Wood discovers body

Former Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood discovered a man's body floating in Chicago's Belmont Harbor Monday, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune. Wood was reportedly paddle boarding around 11:10 a.m. when he discovered the body. He immediately called 911, according to a police report. According to the Tribune, the identity of the man was not revealed, but an identification...

Cubs: Carlos Marmol DFA, Ian Stewart released

credit: getty images The Chicago Cubs have designated Carlos Marmol for assignment released infielder Ian Stewart. Neither move is surprising as both players struggled to perform. Marmol had experienced multiple meltdowns this season and owns a 5.86 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. He is still owed about half of his $9.8 salary for the season which should keep anyone away from claiming him on...

Cubs' David DeJesus progressing but no date set for return

For Chicago Cubs center fielder David DeJesus and Cub fans, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that DeJesus's shoulder does not need surgery. The bad news is that there is still no word on when he can rejoin the Cubs or even begin baseball activities. MLB.com's Cubs beat writer Carrie Muskat reports that DeJesus is making steady progress in his rehab from...

Kerry Wood Discovers Dead Body in Chicago Harbor While Paddle Boarding

Ex-Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood made a gruesome discovery Monday morning. Wood was paddle boarding in Belmont Harbor in Chicago when he discovered a man’s body floating in the water, according to the Chicago Tribune. Wood immediately notified police of the incident. The victim had an identification tag on his left wrist indicating that the man had been reporting missing by a North Side...

The Cubs should keep Matt Garza despite recent injuries

It is no secret that the Chicago Cubs have some valuable trade chips for the fast-approaching mid-season trading frenzy. As the Cubs once again become sellers at -- or even well before -- the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, they will have a number of veterans who could help push a contending team over the top for a division title or wild card berth. MLB Injury News's Blaine...

Cubs designate Carlos Marmol for assignment, release Ian Stewart

The Chicago Cubs have finally cut ties with two of their most frustrating players. Third baseman Ian Stewart, who went on a ridiculous Twitter tirade two weeks ago, has been released, and closer Carlos Marmol has been designated for assignment. We'll start with Stewart, who has been a disappointment since joining the Cubs in a trade with the Rockies prior to the 2012 season...

Brewers hope Kyle Lohse can slow Cubs' offense

The Chicago Cubs have long known Starlin Castro could be a defensive liability, but his offensive struggles have been a bit more perplexing. He'll look to get back on track in both facets while extending his hitting streak against the Milwaukee Brewers to 11 games Tuesday night as Chicago tries to end an eight-game skid at Miller Park. The 23-year-old Castro didn't become...

Cubs DFA Marmol, promote Bogusevic, release Stewart

Hot News for RP Carlos Marmol

Starlin Castro’s season is so bad it reminded me of Ronny Cedeno

The other day I happened to think of Ronny Cedeno and how awful he was in 2006. I couldn't help but wonder how Starlin Castro's 2013 season compared to Cedeno's 2005. Year Name PA BB% K% ISO BABIP AVG OBP SLG wOBA wRC+ Fld BsR WAR 2006 Cedeno 572 3.0% 19.1% .094 .296 .245 .271 .339 .263 47 -4.4 -0.8 -1.8 2013 Castro 326 3.7% 18.7% .090 .275 .228 .264 .318...

Cubs-Brewers Preview

The Chicago Cubs have long known Starlin Castro could be a defensive liability, but his offensive struggles have been a bit more perplexing. He'll look to get back on track in both facets while extending his hitting streak against the Milwaukee Brewers to 11 games Tuesday night as Chicago tries to end an eight-game skid at Miller Park. Double Digit Madness

Back in May I asked the Cubs to score double-digit runs in honor of Ron Santo.  For the longest time, the Cubs could just get to nine runs but couldn’t get over the hump. It only took playing the god-awful Astros (who had been on a bit of a streak but are still terrible) to get to double-digit runs for the first time all season.  The Cubs won the game, won the series, and in...
